Welcome to our TAFE digital students and we're today providing a recorded session for you to help you develop your referencing skills and put together a bibliography for the information that you've researched while undertaking your different studies.

So when TAFE Digital students log in to our TAFE Digital campus, The address is studytafensw.edu.au and you can see the login screen you'll have there for your user ID, which is your name provided to you by TAFE in the correct format and your own unique password.

And at this point, if you're having trouble logging in, you can see at the bottom of the screen, there's a link there for Help for TAFE students.

So please take advantage of the options of help that is available if you're stuck at this point.

So this referencing guide is put together for students in the diploma, the certificate 4 and the statement of attainment in our library courses and eventually we will also be able to offer certificate 3.

When you log into your TAFE digital campus page, you can see there's a link at the bottom of the screen to the TAFE NSW Library Services.

And that's where we're going today to get the help that we need to create our bibliography in the correct format, following the guidelines provided by TAFE.

If you're stuck and you haven't got access to your TAFE page for some reason, but you still wanna go to the library services page, you can do an internet search and just using the words TAFE library and this library services will pop up in your list of your results.

And the TAFE library has a range of resources to help students.

But today we'll be just looking at the reference guides.

And in future sessions, we'll look at the library subject guides they provide and do some extra searching using the TAFE eResources in a third recorded session.

So from the TAFE library page you can see there's a link there, the library services home page and on that page there's a range of tabs that will guide you to different help sections.

But what we're going to look at today is the how-to guides on the right hand side and the fourth link down, research and referencing.

When we get to that page you can see there's another group of little blue tabs that gather together information to help you in different aspects.

On the welcome page, there's a link to the library online session on referencing.

So this is available to all TAFE students and you can hop in there and see when the next sessions will be scheduled and you can join any of those sessions to develop your skills in creating your bibliography and developing the ability to reference correctly.

Under the Research Skills tab, there's help there on evaluating resources and that will come in handy in many of your units where you're asked to evaluate the resources that you're using.

So keep in mind that apart from the learning guides in your unit, the TAFE library has information to support your development of those skills as well.

The writing skills tab, there's a link there to books that you might look at or the Smart Thinking Link, which is a service provided by TAFE for all students and it's out of hours support where you can get help with writing your assessment report answers and putting together bibliographies and things like that.

So that's available to everybody and you can access that as well if that's something you'd like to use.

There's also films on demand, different topics, also helpful in developing your skills.

Under the academic skills tab there's links to information about the ethical issues of plagiarism and copyright infringement and I suggest you all have a look at the little videos and recordings and information here to ensure that the information you're providing in your assessments complies with those requirements.

There's links to pages about copyright where you can develop that understanding and this will also be useful for you when you're completing the copyright unit, you've got ready access to that information straight from the TAFE Library Services home page.

But for today we're going to look at the referencing skills and under that tab, you'll see there's a little bit of information there about what's the difference between a bibliography and a reference list.

And for our purposes, we'll be creating bibliographies for your research.

And it's a list of all the resources that have been read in the research of your assignment.

Not necessarily referred to in your answer, but if you've looked at that information and it's been what you've used to compile your information, it will be included in your bibliography.

So it's important that that be submitted with your assessment so we can see what you've looked at and how you've gathered the information for your answers.

Under the referencing skills tab, you'll see a link to a guide to TAFE NSW referencing Harvard style and it's this guide with the lady with the yellow spotty top and she's the 1 who's going to be our answer to creating a correct bibliography.

We'll do an example right now of an online database journal article that we'll look up and so when we're using this guide we can see in the index there's a link to how to create the reference for journals, newspapers and magazine articles and articles retrieved from databases.

So on that page, we can see in the red print there, a format guide for how that reference is put together.

So you can see it starts with the author's surname.

It then has the initial, the year of the article, the article title, the title of the newspaper or magazine.

And you'll note that that is printed in italic, so it sets it apart from the other writing in your list.

We then have the day and the month and the page range of the information and the publication details.

And then we have the date that you viewed that information and the name of the database or the URL for the website.

So the red printing on each of the pages in this guide gives you the format and the black printing above it are various examples of how that comes together from an actual article.

So you can see the top response there has got painter, Jay, the person's first name, and the surname and their initial, the year that the article was published, the name of the article and then the name of the newspaper in italics, the date of the publication and then the date the information was viewed and the website.

So it's followed that guide that's been given.

On each page there's also dot point information to help you do your best at putting together what you need to do.

Now if we wanted to look for some information again from the Library Services homepage we can click on search eResources, the little pink tab and that will take us to a list of databases.

So I've selected from that list Australian New Zealand Reference Centre, ANZRC, and I've done a search on that page in the search bar for library information services.

I haven't combined them in any way and I've just done a basic search.

From the results list that has come up, I've selected 1 of those articles for my example and it's called Mitigating Risk.

It's from Insight Journal and it was published on the 1st of November 2021, volume 42, issue 6, page 5 and it's 1 page long.

So that information is shown on that screen for me.

You can also see the subject terms listed there.

So when we're looking at putting together information for a catalogue entry and we would use subject headings, you can see this article also has subject terms listed in the database.

When you're looking at different databases to do your research, they are all slightly different but follow much the same format.

But you can see up in the right-hand corner of my screen, I've starred the help button.

And that's where you can go to look for help on using this particular database.

And the same will apply if you went to EBSCO host or Gale databases, the same help is available.

Down the right hand side is our list of tools.

And you can see there, you can print this item, email it to yourself, save it.

There's our citation button that we'll look at or you can export it to another place.

When I click on full text, the little star on the left highlights where the PDF full text is available from.

It gives me the information and the article that I'm looking at.

And you can see here, we also still have our little links on the right, the citation tab, which is a little note page, and the bottom paperclip link is the permalink access to this article.

So when I'm putting together my bibliography it's the permalink link that I will use, not the link in the top of my search bar on the screen, because this is contained within the article, and it takes me directly to this resource once I log into the database.

If you give people the link at the top of the page, and they don't have your login to this database.

So they won't be able to access that information.

It's important to use the permalink that's included in the results.

So then if I go back to my TAFE New South Wales referencing guide, my Harvard style guide, I can see that I will then put together my bibliography and it's a 1 continuous list of all the resources I've looked at.

I don't break it down into a list of books and a list of videos and a list of e-resources.

It's 1 continuous list in alphabetical order depending on the first word of that citation.

So the first 1 has the person's surname, The second 1 is the article title, the journal title, and so it goes on.

So there's no divisions within the bibliography.

So in summary, once you've logged into your study TAFE nsw.edu.au site, take the link at the bottom of the page to the New South Wales Library Services, click on the Research and Referencing Guide and on the Referencing Skills tab, takes us to our Harvard style guide from that page.

From there, I can use the index to find the page I'm looking for and follow the examples that are provided to put together my bibliography.

Also from the library services page, there's information about annotated bibliographies that might be needed for some units.

So always check back there and see what else is available.

And don't forget to look at the other referencing information on research skills, study skills, academic skills and digital literacy, which will all be useful in other aspects of your course.
