## Introduction
Every year, we gather with a cherished group of couples we’ve known for over 40 years. This tradition is a time of sharing stories, reflecting on the past year, and witnessing the faithfulness of God in our lives. It was especially touching this year as we remembered those who have passed on and celebrated the resilience of those who remain. 

## A Story of Faith and Friendship
One poignant story that emerged from our gathering is that of Monique, a woman living on Molson Street. Monique and Lulu became friends over four years ago, bonding over their children who played together frequently. 

- **A Deep Question**: Monique approached Lulu one day and asked, “What happens when we die?” This question opened the door for Lulu to share her faith, leading Monique and her family to embrace Christianity.
- **Facing Trials**: Unfortunately, Monique faced significant challenges when she was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. Despite her suffering, she has shown remarkable hope and resilience.

### The Question of Hope
This brings us to an important question: **How can a person maintain hope in difficult circumstances?** 

## Foundations of Hope in Isaiah 40
As we delve into Isaiah 40, we discover six foundational truths about hope that apply both to the Jews in Babylon and to us today:

### 1. Comfort from God
- **Isaiah 40:1**: “Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God. This verse emphasizes God’s desire to remove distress and bring comfort to His people.
- **A Relationship Unbroken**: Despite their suffering, God reassures the Israelites that He is still in covenant with them, declaring, “You are my people.”

### 2. Acknowledging Our Suffering
- The Israelites recognized that their suffering was a consequence of their unfaithfulness to God. However, God still offers comfort and forgiveness.
- **Deuteronomy 28**: This chapter outlines the consequences of disobedience, which the Israelites experienced firsthand in Babylon.

### 3. God’s Unconditional Love
- No sin is too great for God’s love and forgiveness. Regardless of our past, God invites us to receive His comfort.

The true essence of the Gospel is not merely about our shortcomings or the need for forgiveness; it is fundamentally about **who Jesus is** and **what He has accomplished**. 

- **Jesus is King**: The Gospel declares that Jesus is Lord and has done everything necessary for us to be part of God’s family. 
- **Our Focus**: As Christians, our focus should not be solely on ourselves but on Jesus—His life, His sacrifice, and His ongoing work in our lives.

In Isaiah, we see the promise of God’s coming, which is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus. The good news is that through Him, we can experience the glory of God and the comfort of His presence.

Once a year we meet with 8 or 9 couples that we have known for over 40 years that have been involved with us, with the churches that we started, with the ministries that God developed.

There were, and the flu would have been there, there would have been 8 women, but there was only 3 men.

And as we were speaking 1 to another, we were sharing with 1 another what God had done during the year through our churches, through our children.

Every year when we do this, my heart is full, full, even today as I'm thinking about it, to see these people staying faithful for over 40 years.

It's amazing, especially when we consider the pain and suffering some of them have gone through.

I'd like to tell a story this morning of 1 woman who lives on Molson Street not very far from here.

Her and Lulu became friends over 4 years ago.

They would talk with each other over the fence.

We had 3 kids and they were all of similar ages so they were playing always together and they were in each other's house all the time.

But 1 day, Monique came up to Lulu over the fence.

And she says to Lulu, do you, She was speaking in French, so I will go there.

What a way to open up an opportunity to witness, She became Christian, her husband, her sister, a brother-in-law, but they went through many trials.

She went for a checkup a little bit over 2 years ago and Bar Hazal, although we know that that doesn't exist with the Lord, they said they were doing a test and it would be free for her and it would be good if she took it.

And she did take it and she found out that she had cancer.

For 2 years now she's had her treatments, I think it's every second week, and of course for anyone that's been through that, for the doctors that are in the congregation, you know, that a person can suffer quite a bit.

She'd have 2 or 3 days that were okay, and then for a week she'd be really down.

And her and Lulu keep contact through the phone and Lulu and I, you know, when we talk with her even Lulu says, Les, she's my child in Christ, but she's way ahead of me.

When we talk with her, what surprises us is her hope despite all the suffering and all the pain.

And that brings us to our question this week.

How can a person have hope or continue in hope in difficult circumstances?

As we go into our passage in Isaiah 40, I believe we have 6 foundations, 6 basics for the question of hope.

And I would like to, this morning, look at several ways that we might overcome the obstacles that inhibit these foundations.

I will do this by looking at Isaiah in chapter 40 with its different segments.

There's 6 that I'm going to bring forward today.

And how it applied, first of all, to the Jews in Babylon at this time, and then how it applies to us today.

So let's take the first, that's it, Keith, thanks.

We read in Isaiah chapter 40 and verse 1, comfort, comfort my people, says your God, Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and proclaim to her.

You know, the people that were living in Babylon, they were there because of what they had done with regards to God.

1 of the chapters that's a very, very important chapter in understanding the Old Testament is in Deuteronomy.

All of Deuteronomy is important, but the last chapters, especially chapter 28 and 29, are very, very important for us to understand what's happening as the Old Testament progresses, as the Old Testament evolves.

There are so many verses in Deuteronomy chapter 28.

I'll read some of them a little bit later on, that talked to us of what the Jews would suffer and how much pain they would have if they did not stay faithful to God's covenant And they did not obey his law.

Most of all, they didn't have God and His temple.

In a way, they did not have the presence of God.

And so, God says to Isaiah here, after the first 39 chapters, where we listen to the judgments of God upon the Jewish nation but also upon the nations around the Jewish nations.

But in chapter 40, the whole atmosphere changes and God starts to say things that would be encouraging.

And in Isaiah, this is not the first time he says something twice.

It's sort of a way that he puts emphasis on what he

This word comfort is not just a noun, it's a verb.

It means bringing Comfort by changing the situation that causes pain Get people out of their distress So God is saying say to the people command to the people a comfort that would get them out of the situation in which they were in at that moment.

And the idea here is that God wants them to be encouraged, not by a harsh word, but with soft and caring words of love.

Even though their situation is horrible, I'm still in covenant with you.

I have a relationship with you and that relationship will never never be destroyed never you know we look at our lives whether we are believers or whether we're not believers, and we say, my goodness gracious, Life is difficult and there is a lot of suffering in this world.

Maybe there's a lot of suffering in your life.

To the point that you say to yourself, well why?

And maybe you say to yourself, for yourself, why is there so much suffering in my life?

And at times, we ask ourselves, what's happening here?

I am in covenant with God, and it just seems like everything is being destroyed.

I have nothing what I see some other Christians have.

I have nothing compared to what I see that the Bible might want me to have.

Really life is difficult and I start to feel that I am being rejected.

God was saying to the people of Israel, you are my people.

I want to encourage in your lives and in your situation.

I want you To experience what I have always wanted for you since the beginning.

That's what I want for you But very often we don't have that hope because we feel that we're being rejected by God In your lives whether you are a Christian or not, don't you feel sometimes God is not there?

What Isaiah is telling us in this word comfort, comfort, that's not the way God is for us.

There are people maybe here today that say, well, I'm not a Christian, so is this true for me?

I know we heard a couple of weeks ago an exposition of the idea of election or predestination.

Not that I'm going to go against what was said, but I'd like to put a little bit of a swing on it, a little bit of another idea.

When God said he was going to destroy the world the first time, he was going to do it by water, right?

No, I was preaching for 1 whole year, supposedly.

The door was left open for 7 days so that anybody that wanted could get in the ark.

He had predestined that the way that people would be saved was through the ark.

With us, God has predestined, He has chosen, He has predestined, he has planned in advance that there would be a body of people that would pass through the judgment and be saved.

Not individually, Although we can be saved individually.

Everyone is asked in Genesis, you want to get in a boat?

Jesus has said that God so loved the world.

The only way that someone can be saved is if they are in Jesus, not in the ark, in Jesus.

That is the way that God has chosen, predestined in his foreknowledge, so that people can become part of the family of God.

And anyone here today can be part of that family if they get in the ark, if they believe in Jesus.

God is our creator and he is our redemptor.

Because he is our creator, he loves every single person in this world But he is only their redemptor of those that get in the ark that get in Jesus Jesus is the only way that someone may become a member of the family of God and to be able to receive the comfort that God wants.

God wishes everyone here to receive this comfort.

God wishes everyone here that's living in terrible circumstances that feels that they're rejected by God.

God loves you, but we put up an obstacle.

Friends, Brothers and sisters, man and woman and children, I tell you this morning on the authority of the Word of God that God loves every single 1 of you.

You are here today, you have been created, and God loves you.

And to love you more, you have to become part of the people of God.

And to become part of the people of God, you have to Be in Jesus.

It says, your hard service has been completed.

That She has received from the Lord's hand double for her sins.

The Israelites knew that they were suffering double what they should suffer.

They were suffering because of what they had done.

They had been unfaithful to the covenant that God had made to them.

I'll read just several verses in Deuteronomy chapter 28.

When you go home, if you want, read the whole chapter, starting in verse 15 right to the end 67 or 68 but I'll just read a couple of verses the Lord will bring a nation against you from far away in Isaiah where were they in Babylon they were in Babylon from the ends of the earth like an eagle swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand, a fierce looking nation, without respect for the old or pity for the young.

They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed.

They will leave you no grain, new wine, or olive oil, nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined.

They will lay siege to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down.

They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the Lord your God has given you.

Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb.

The flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you.

Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion or his own brother or wife he loves or his surviving children and he will not give to 1 of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating.

It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities.

Blows my mind the judgment that will come upon Israel because they have been unfaithful, because they have not lived up to the purpose that God has given to his people.

And so the Israelites are in Babylon and they read this chapter and they see that everything the chapter says has come true in their lives.

And I can just imagine them when God says, comfort, comfort, yeah, comfort.

But Lord, I'm living everything I'm living because I'm a sinner.

How can you look at my life and say you forgive me?

Every single person here this morning, every single person has secrets every single 1 of us those secrets especially the ones that we don't dare say out loud, God says, those secrets will not keep you from me.

There is no sin here in this room or in this world that is big and bad enough that God says, I can't come for you.

Because we think we're too much of a sinner.

Come on, each 1 of us, we have those sins that persist in our life.

That we confess, that we repent, that we let go, and next day we do the same thing again.

Or the next week, or the next year, I don't know.

And we look at ourselves, an evil 1, he gets us into ourselves, inside of ourselves, and we say, oh, I'm not good.

Maybe there's some people that know, but God knows more.

I think I've already shared with you when Paul started out his ministry, when he's writing Corinthians, he says to the Corinthians, I'm the least of the apostles.

When he's writing to the Ephesians later on in his life, he says, I am the least of the saints.

In other words, I'm the smallest of those that call themselves Christians and are part of the family of God.

At the end of his life, in 2 Timothy, what does he say?

God came into the world to save sinners and I am the chief 1 I'm the worst Paul as he grew in God he didn't see himself as better he saw himself as worse and that's what happens the light shines in our life And as we're in the Word of God and we're with the brethren, the light shines in our life and we see who we are.

But I'm telling you, no matter who we are, how we feel, how we look at ourselves.

God looks at you, and he says, I love you.

You're not bad enough that I can't save you.

You're not bad enough that I can't comfort you.

There's always a nouvelle engagement with God.

There's always new life, always for those people that are in him.

Don't let your sinfulness stop you from receiving the comfort of God.

A voice of 1 calling in the wilderness, prepare the way for the Lord.

Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low.

The rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.

And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." There's a very interesting development as we read the New Testament.

Not only because of them, but because he wanted to use Israel to bless the whole world.

And he still does use Israel to bless the whole world, but we'll get there a little bit later.

But we see The reason why the Israelites thought they were so important, they were so special, there was just 1 reason that was important for them.

When the Lord took Israel out of Egypt and he brought them into the promised land, even as he was going through the desert, the glory of God was there in the cloud.

Glory of God came down on the tabernacle, and later on the glory of God came down into the temple that's important not in this up in a esoteric way it is important in the sense that the Israelites believed according to what God had said there was only 1 place that God encountered man.

Only 1 place where heaven and earth came together.

I'll read you something from Ezekiel chapter 10.

The glory of the Lord leaves the threshold of the temple and stands above the cherubim.

The cherubim then lifts their wings and move to the east gate, symbolizing the gradual departure of God's presence from the temple.

The glory of the Lord moves further from the east gate to a mountain east of the city, often interpreted as the mountain of Olives.

This marks, check this out, this marks the final departure of God's glory from Jerusalem.

They had lost what was the most important for them.

Even today, for the Jewish person, what is important is the Shekinai.

It's God being present and God being present in the temple.

The only way that they would experience his presence again is if there was repentance.

And so Isaiah says the same thing as Mark says in chapter 1.

The beginning of the good news or the beginning of the gospel about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet.

The gospel is about Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God.

I will send my messenger ahead of you who will prepare your way, a voice of 1 calling in the wilderness, prepare the way for the Lord.

And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, in the desert, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

You see, God was going to return in the time of Jesus.

But his people had to prepare a way for him.

It's amazing if you look at the word way or the word en France et chemin that's used in the gospels.

It's not just being used in a flippant way, it's being used as This is the way of the Lord.

This is the way the Lord is going to return to his temple This is the way the glory of God is going to return to his temple and John the Baptist was called to prepare the people by baptism for the remission of sins Not the remission of sins as we understand it.

The remission of sins as Isaiah understood it and the Jewish people understood it.

You see the Jews were under God's condemnation.

The only way that they could again receive the presence of God is if their sins were forgiven.

They had to repent and the way they did it according to the gospels in Mark, Luke, Matthew and John is through John Baptist who's baptizing so that the people would show repentance toward the way that they lived in front of God, so that they could receive the remission of sins that they knew that they needed if they were once again going to receive the presence of God in their midst.

1 of the reasons sometimes is we don't have hope is we're in error.

All through the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke especially, because I know them a little bit better.

Jesus is telling the Jewish nation, I'm here, your King is here, I'm here.

Turn to me how I wanted you to turn toward me, to repent.

Realize that it is not the way that you think that you're going to receive the presence and the glory of God.

At our Wednesday night Bible study I told them this week, there was a big difference between the people, how they regarded God in Galilee and how they regarded God in Jerusalem or in Judea.

In Galilee, the Pharisees, The Pharisees had a tremendous influence.

They had an influence also in Judea, but nothing like they had in Galilee.

And in Jerusalem, in Judah, the ones that had the influence were the high priests and the priests.

They didn't want to get away from their error.

They were making money like it was coming out of trees.

Jesus comes and starts to tell them something completely different that it's not right.

Like the people in the Dead Sea Scrolls said, too.

The Pharisees, while staying with the priests, they did not want Jesus because they didn't want things to change you see they believed that in a way Because they were chosen by God as the priests they already had God they were the ones there was 1 the holy there are the Suverainty of The high priest would go into the holy of holies once a year for the people so that the people could be forgiven.

And so this person says, and you can read some of what Caiaphas believed and Annas believed, but they believed that they were the people that mediated the presence of God between God and the Israelites.

Anybody else coming in to say that, we're not going to be accepted.

The Pharisees were not like we have understood in the past, you know, they were into works and you had to live in a certain way and then God would accept you.

The Pharisees believed they were already accepted by God.

What they believed though, God's presence had to come back, but to come back you had to live in a certain way so that God would see that we were being faithful to his covenant, and then he would come back and reign as king.

You're in the gospels and you're looking at Jesus and what he does doesn't obey the Sabbath eats with dirty hands he's doing all kinds of stuff that he shouldn't be doing that's why the Pharisees are against him he says the kingdom of God is among you far as you know way The way that you're talking about the kingdom of God coming in is not the way we understand it.

But I've grown up with thoughts about God, about Jesus, about the Christian life that is so Poo-lee.

How come you can talk to some of your friends and say, Oh, are you a Christian?

With Jesus, there is no I hope or I don't know.

Voice says, cry out, and I said, what shall I cry?

All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness like the flowers of the field.

The grass withers and the flowers fell because the breath of the Lord blows on them.
