Which language should you start with when learning Data Structures & Algorithms? Java and C++ are the two most popular ones and the ones regarding which I have received the most questions.

Hey everyone, welcome back to the channel and today we are talking about Java vs C++ for data structures and algorithms.

Now this is a question we are getting quite a lot even in our discord server now that we are starting our 0 to fang M complete data structures and algorithms free boot camp.

Now the short answer is it does not matter.

There are 2 paths when you're first stepping into college so there are 2 paths that people follow in order to get a nice job.

1 is the only competitive programming part.

These are the people who do competitive programming right from their first day of college or you know a few weeks after that or whatever.

They heavily focus on it, get some really high rankings and you know then they get some really nice rankings in some of the biggest competitive programming contests like ACM, ICPC, Google Code Jam, Facebook Hacker Cup, Google Kickstart for example, really high on Codeforces, Codechef and Adcoder or whatever.

So this is 1 path and this is some path that many people follow and most definitely you know success is success chances for such people who have such higher rankings in these online platforms is very high.

Many companies directly hire them based on their profile and so on and so forth.

The second path that people follow including me that I followed was development open source work and like focusing on projects and you know all the development work plus data structures and algorithms plus problem solving.

So in both of these paths, you can see that data structures algorithms and problem solving is a must.

If I'm saying that in path number 2, which is the development and you know, open source path, you are not doing competitive programming.

You're not doing the online competitions or taking part in these competitive programming contests.

That does not mean that you will skip data structures, algorithms and problem solving.

To answer the question of Java versus C++ will be answering that it depends on person to person and what you want to achieve some people say that CP is the only way to make it big that is a lie CP competitive programming is not mandatory it is not like if you don't do competitive programming you cannot make it or big fan companies won't hire you okay many people make it via CP like hardcore CP some really high rankings and stars and whatever but the thing that is also true is most people are doing it just to get a good job.

Most people are just doing it because it is going to be asked in the interviews and that is a myth.

So the core CP concepts that are like you know they sort of overlap with like your DSA problem solving.

So DSA problem solving you can see comes inside of compare programming.

Okay and that is the part like if you're only doing lead code and understanding every problem clearly and like if you you know watch the bootcamp that we are starting from 1st august you will be able to clear all the interviews and you would not have to be doing the competitive programming part.

During this bootcamp also you will be able to do competitive programming as well.

You will get started with competitive programming with platforms like lead code, even hard questions, hard level questions, code chef and all these other platforms.

Not everyone can do hardcore competitive programming.

Many people get bored, many people don't have that much motivation and many people might not have the time.

For example, if your third year just starting to get over I would not recommend the you know completely starting from scratch computer programming path I would recommend you to build projects work with like various startups focus on your problem solving in the test algorithms okay computer programming is not everyone and if it is not for you it does not mean you're missing out you can totally skip it okay but then you have to focus on your personal profile your public profile your development profile your github your projects open source and data structure algorithm problem solving is a must in any of these parts now I personally believe that development and open source is a safer option like with more opportunities as compared to competitive programming that is just my personal view and you know you get to via this approach you also get to start earning in college you have like so many you know opportunities that will come your way less risk as compared to doing just competitive programming you might not make it with competitive programming you might make it with competitive programming right but with data structures algorithms and projects and you know you're the open source work the number of opportunities that will open to you especially remote international opportunities that will open for you based on your profile that is quite quite a lot as compared to just competitive programming cool now the next step is regarding like Java so who would want to be doing Java right so this is the topic Java versus C++ so Java is great for computer programming it's great for that it's great for problem-solving it's great for your interviews and it's great for like development as well.

So if you want to do like if you want to do open source and then you want to apply to open source programs like Google summer of code, etc.

C++ is amazing for competitive programming problem-solving and data success algorithms as well, But doing development and contributing to open source in C++ is a little bit difficult that people like students usually face.

Students feel like contributing to C++ open source projects is a bit difficult because the projects are very complex.

I have personally seen many students reach out to me like C++ projects are very hard as compared to Java other projects.

Okay, these are like mostly like system project or whatever.

I personally haven't contributed to C++ projects.

So yeah, that's the main reason like what Java you can use for and what C++ in terms of like data structures algorithms you can use for both of these languages are great for even also compare programming and like you know the development part and in the online competitions like Google code jam and other competitions I have seen people who who use java quite a lot so if your aim is just to you know be a decent like good competitive programmer and you know take part in all these competitions and stuff java can definitely you know help you that it's a great choice java is also being used in a lot of companies so I know many people who do C++ and then when they do get a job in the end in their role they are doing java so it's not like C++ is not being used, it is also being used but I have seen mostly like Java is being used at a lot of places as well.

Now I hope that gave you a bit of an understanding regarding CP versus the just the CP path and the development plus DSA plus problem solving path which is I followed.

Fang M is great, but a little bit overrated.

Because most of the off-campus and remote opportunities, they have like great opportunities.

They pay you even more than Fang M in India.

It's not like it's a, you know, end of the world that I will only be in FAANG, I only want to do FAANG.

No, there are better opportunities out there as well.

There are less better opportunities out there as well.

Okay, it's not like a really big thing or like this is the only thing I want to do as a computer science students.

No, there are multiple opportunities available for you.

Most of the time in your software development or whatever in the end you would have to be do you would be doing development.

So having a bit of experience with development in your college is great and you can get a lot of opportunities via that again and again like I'm saying less risk is involved in doing Development and open source as compared to just competitive programming because competitive programming is not for everyone There's something I can say very very clearly and there are more options in development.

So many, you know paths that you can follow internships You can do remote work you can do that.

You might not be able to with just competitive programming Many of the biggest companies that you know amazing companies remote startups in like, you know, us singapore london and stuff They don't even when I gave my interviews.

They did not even ask me computer programming or DSA.

Everything will be, was focused on my open source profile.

Off campus is very easy, like in terms of if you're, if you're doing development.

And the next question is, should you do competitive programming only?

If you feel like you can be 1 of the biggest you know like the like the many people who make it via competitive programming like under you know under 2 digit rank like 2 digit rank in like big competitions and stuff only know only you know about your interests so that is up to you so if you're going for that hardcore stuff you can go with C++ or Java totally up to you but to answer the question Java versus C++ I said it does not matter that's true don't be limited to just 1 language I can code proficiently in 7 to 8 languages and if you do 1 language learning the other language is going to be very easy for example in this boot camp you can do java regarding because because of all the points that I have mentioned and then if you feel like you want to do C++ and go to the competitive programming route that is also something this particular bootcamp is going to help you with because we will be heavily focusing on problem solving, solving a lot of questions.

So in the end, if you feel like, hey, I want to do C++, I want to go down the competitive programming route, then you can do C++.

That will not take you much time because you will also be having already be having experience in working with some other programming language such as java.

So to answer your question java or c++ totally up to you.

I mentioned all the you know points in this video and yeah don't be limited to 1 language you can do both.

I know both the languages and I like Java more so I code in Java.

See what you like every language has its own use cases.

So it's not a this or that question totally your preference.

I am not the 1 who can guide you related to only competitive programming path.

I have never followed that path and I don't recommend that to people as well.

But if you feel like competitive programming is your thing, you want to do just competitive programming as always, please reach out to someone on LinkedIn who has made it into their career just via competitive programming being from a tier 2, tier 3 college.

They will be able to guide you much more than that.
