So a few months back, I purchased what I think is 1 of the most dangerous tools that a woodworker can buy on Facebook for $1, 200.

Now I made a video of me trying to put this tool together and use it to the best of my ability and I got torn to pieces by thousands of you.

I'd rather see that video just have never existed.

If we're going to do a half-assed job reviewing something, I'm just gonna Malarkey this.

You know, he's not taking me up on my offer.

I genuinely had no idea that such a deep-rooted community existed when it came to the shop smith and you guys were pissed.

A lot of people in the community made response videos to my video and called me everything from an idiot to a moron,

And that's fine everyone's entitled to their opinion just like I'm entitled to mine when it comes to the shop smith but 1 video stood out and that was from Scott from a channel called my growth rings where he challenged me to come out to my shop and see if he could convince me otherwise about my shop smith.

So to issue him a little bit of a throw down.

So Scott's here and I'm gonna see if he can change my mind on this plastic coupler here.

All these damn set screws and if he really does believe they're safe.

I really want to gauge his opinion on if he thinks having the power switch all the way over here for any accessory is a good idea.

Does he actually believe this thing saves space, especially with tools nowadays?

And we're going to see if he can actually convince me that this is a good tool for a beginner woodworker.

not familiar, Scott has over 250 videos on his channel, My Growth Rings.

A lot of it's based around the shop smith.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say whatever you want, cause you're gonna do it anyway.

The foremost expert of the shop smith on YouTube would be my opinion.

And the first person to create a response video after I put out my video.

Than what I thought it was from someone who's actually been working on the tool for decades.

But first, how do you feel the shopsmith community felt about me shining a light on this beloved tool that I just wasn't aware was so opinionated?

I would say that we have a love-hate relationship with you, John.

We felt it wasn't represented as it should have been.

Always been intimidated by its complexities, which you're gonna hopefully today get rid of for me, any apprehension towards the complexities of the tool.

Showing us how to actually put 1 together.

And then I'm gonna ask you a couple questions, just see how this thing's actually supposed to run.

I think we should confess right off the start though it is more complex than any 1 of its individual functions.

The great news is the learning curves very very quick.

So I mean I'm looking forward to seeing how a real professional uses it considering I'm just a clown and we're gonna try not to in Scott's words, maleky this 1 and half-ass it.

I never use the table on this end and I rarely use the floating tables.

So, you know, right off the bat, if somebody were to buy it like this and think this is how they're supposed to use it, They're already starting off at a bad point.

Scott was immediately pointing out a few things, which were missing a few pins, right?

And there are some parts that are not assembled correctly, and maybe that was done by the previous owner.

So this is why At least the beginning of the instructions are critical because you can make sure that things are where they're supposed to be

for sure And I think something that's interesting that I want to kind of set the precedence for here is like your audience Way different than my audience and that's how YouTube works but that being said I understand that a lot of my viewers are looking for those first couple tools to get into woodworking or DIY or anything like that.

And I've come to know from the rebuttal videos that the shopsmith audience is, it's not intended for that.

Your video was not intended for that you're saying?

The shopsmith tool, you want to have a baseline right?

Like you guys aren't saying this tool is for the bare-bones beginner that's never touched a tool before.

I would say that that person can get themselves in trouble.

Because I felt it's like I've had 10 years playing with tools

Scott just pointed out the table's on backwards.

So when I bought this thing it was say halfway assembled.

I didn't ask any questions of if it was done right or if it wasn't right and I kind of went with intuition on what I thought was the next stages.

Don't do that if you're buying 1 of these, right?

It would be like me saying to you, John, you have a beautiful drill press.

Go over there and set that up as a table saw.

Something a lot of the shopsmith communities and Scott pointed out in his first rebuttal video, you should read the manual when it comes to using any tool.

Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools.

So I got super lucky that the owner still had this.

And you should be reading the manual, but that's a bit intimidating.

This is part of the reason, John, why my channel exists.

Younger generations, for lack of better terms, they're gonna go to video more times than not.

And thankfully your content's out there, but you're still gonna wing a lot of it, right?

You're gonna like watch maybe a segment of the video and be like, oh, I got it.

And then miss like 3 extra points in the back end.

I guess it's the nature of the beast these days when we all have insanely short attention spans and whatnot.

Exactly, so that's exactly what I did, right?

And a lot of the comments on your videos from other people were like, this idiot can't read and blah, blah, blah.

If I could audio this, I would do that all day.

I'm interested to see how you can simplify

All of this, when it's properly lubricated, should slide pretty much effortlessly.

How this is the tapered flat that the tools are gonna rest on.

There is a tapered flat that this collar should be on.

At some point it got moved so that needs to be back where it belongs.

A lot of folks think that's how you align the riving knife on the saw guard but it's not.

And that adjustment shown in the manual Joe.

But now anytime I put the tool on here all I have to do is remember to align it side by side with that 1AM

I comfortable with the tiny little screw holding my machine together?

I'm just not someone who wants to go, tiny little set screw, let's put a 10, 000 RPM or whatever, spitting blade of death on it.

Go through the setup and then you're good.

You know, he mentioned the safety aspects of it.

And I was saying how dangerous I feel like just having this little screw is and I'm not necessarily convinced it's not dangerous.

But to your point, the physics and geometry behind the tapered flat make a ton of sense and do make it a lot safer.

Now, do I want to be still tightening down my tools with this?

So your experience with Shopsmith is my experience in life.

There is on this end of the machine, the head of it is accessible from the bottom, so you can bring those into alignment.

Then if I put my main table and my extension table up, I can get those accurately aligned to 1 another.

This is why I said your extension table was on the wrong end.

So if the guy I bought it off of did this, it still should be aligned.

And now we're at a point where I think it makes sense to talk about the 5 point safety check.

Impatient people like me, or just the younger generation in general, I would say probably gonna forego that.

If I turn that saw on I don't need to go through a five-point safety check, right?

5 points are basically locks that either enable things to move or to remain stationary.

Table tilt, carriage, table height, headstock lock, quill lock.

So why aren't you squaring it off of this?

Well because we've not yet squared the table or confirmed that the table is square.

Gotcha, so you square the gauge and then the table.

They realize that people pull them out of the box and they want to use

You know, it's like the difference between Ikea furniture and your furniture, right?

But don't you think the tools have evolved?

The original argument where you could save money by buying a shop smith went away when the import started coming in from Asia.

Yeah motors can get just as much power and not have to be as large anymore.

Especially as we're talking cordless brushless tools.

I'm actually surprised because I would expect you to also be a man who liked his plug-in power tools.
