In the Pitesti Human Experiment the methods of torture were designed to break one’s soul from their faith, family and whatever they valued most. The prisoners were students who were devout in their Christian faith. 

Prisoners who became re-educated and unmasked would then become the torturers. No acts of barbarism on humans have ever been worse than what took place inside the Pitesti Prison.
