Following her visit to the Isle of Man for her ‘infectious’ tour, Katie Hopkins sat down with Charlie Morrey to discuss the allegations made against her, all things Manx and what the future holds.

There is no shying away from the fact that Hopkins is a controversial character; some love her and plenty hate her. 

What some may not know is before Hopkins became the well known household name she was destined for a career in the military but her epilepsy stopped her. 

After being unable to carry out her military duties she ended up working in Manhattan and then came back to the UK and became a regular columnist with the Daily Mail; until her own opinions saw her being fired and ending up taking up residency in the United States for a few years before returning to the UK last year. 

During the chat Hopkins addressed her views on the world and how she just wants people to have the “freedom to make their own choices”.

She expressed her love for the Isle of Man and it’s independence; along with the quirks the island has such as the much loved fairy bridge.

So how have you found the Isle of Man so far?

So I haven't been here long enough to understand all the things that are actually going on here, but attitudinally, Isle of Man feels very me.

So this whole thing about we're not owned by anyone we're not UK and we're not EU no 1 owns us I love I love the idea that you don't talk about the mainland you talk about across yeah over there which I think that's positioning wise I think it's that's how I feel about a lot of people, they're across.

And I love as well this three-legged thing you have, so the 3 legs of man, right, isn't it?

And the whole throw us and we still stand.

I also love the fact that to outward appearances, you have fewer rules, which so you don't have to have an MOT.

Compare that to Wales where it's 20 miles an hour, right?

So we have in villages or what have you in towns there'll be a speed limit and when it says no speed limit there is literally,

literally like to convey this to other people there is literally no speed limit.

You don't have capital gains, you don't have you know, so There's a lot that feels like Isle of Man historically wanted people to live their own lives, take accountability for themselves and be free.

That's what it feels like and that's why it appeals to me, yeah.

I started the speakeasies because for me, I think we live in this, like, I spent a lot of time in America when I was completely banned from everything in the UK, like, eviscerated.

And they lived through, more effectively, a time of prohibition when alcohol was banned and so people used to meet in sneaky places to drink.

You can't say what you think, You have to think about what you say before you open your mouth.

If you're me, you can be arrested for a column in a newspaper or arrested for a thought or a tweet.

And so to me, that's what the Speak Easy is now.

Alcohol is speech, speech is the new alcohol, and it's about giving people a way to gather and just speak easy.

And what's glorious is for all the things I'm called, all the names, all the brutal things.

I love that 200 people gathered and they had a lovely time and they stayed 2 hours afterwards just to line up to have chit chats.

How have you ended up at this moment in your life?

Because obviously it was military you were going to

And I still feel like that's what I should be doing.

So out of uni to the Royal Military Academy, sponsored through there by the Intelligence Corps, signed up to serve 35 years as an Intelligence Corps officer and I told them I would be the first female general.

I told them I didn't want a family, I told them I didn't care about anything else, I just wanted to be military.

So I was brutal and I got through Santa's, passed out of the Academy and then I'm also, it turns out, and I sort of knew, I was hiding it, that I'm epileptic.

And so my seizures got worse and worse and I got kind of I wouldn't say caught but it was found out that I'm epileptic and the army figured that you know someone having seizures with a an automatic weapon might not be ideal in defense of the realm.

So I had to leave, ended up in, well first of all in business, 5 years in Manhattan, living in Manhattan, working on Madison Avenue.

Came back to the UK and decided, right, I need to do something completely different.

Applied to The Apprentice, became known, and then ended up in the media, Mail Online, LBC, you know, most read, most listened to, Fox News, Tucker Carlson twice a week.

I was kind of like known, and then I would not conform with what you're supposed to talk about.

I would go to places and show what I was seeing.

And then I was eviscerated, like, annihilated from the planet by powerful forces that come together to just remove you totally.

And so 5 years later, I guess I've popped back up now.

And in the time of the courts, like the Tudor courts, it was the jester that could speak truth to power.

So in my new guise as funny woman, you can get away with a lot if you're funny or if you're doing comedy.

So you can take to Instagram and say, isn't it shocking that people are destroying the Uless cameras.

You can buy the stuff you need from Tool Station.

They can't arrest you because you have an incited vandalism, but yet my message to my supporters is always, come on!

And I don't know that I am funny, I think I'm funny and my audiences have a lovely time.

What's the most ridiculous thing you've heard said about you?

I'm a Nazi, a fascist, that I want old people dead.

That I, I don't, I mean, there's so many things people say, that I called for a final solution to all Muslims, that I have a quote from someone where I've incited violence.

But the important thing for me is I don't ever try and answer it I don't try and say no I didn't say that or oh that isn't true is it there's no point there's no point The people who want to believe I am a monster will believe that no matter what.

And has that had an impact on you, seeing those kind of comments about yourself everywhere?

I mean, It's been 20 years of being in the media 1 way or another now.

So you know, this face is this old for a reason.

Telling the truth will always be an uphill fight.

And for at least 18 years of this, 20 years, I've been hated.

So I'm the most hated woman there was in Britain.

When I went on Celebrity Big Brother, I was the most hated candidate of all time.

Daily Mail ran an article before I went for the biggest bitch in Britain.

You know, I'm used to being thought of the monster, but a really weird thing has happened in that since the world has gone mad, in my opinion, for the last 3 or 4 years, and the Isle of Man and what happened here and the tyranny of government locking down a whole island and separating people from people, which I think is despicable.

Since the madness, it's weird, but because the world got rocked off its kilter or its axis, people did the same with me.

And instead of hating, they've kind of gone, oh, actually, it's quite useful to have a tough old bag who says what she thinks and is calling out what some people think, which is, I think, lockdowns are a load of old crap.

I think the Greenies are a pain in the arse just to get a guy suspiciously lucky might be 1.

Just basically trying to do his trousers up as he comes out the bathroom.

I mean why not do that while you're still in the bathroom rather than have your penis out in the middle of a coffee shop.

Probably hasn't washed his hands either but he's definitely 1 of the better ones.

I'll just say it exactly as I call it but the thing I love and the thing I think some people have got to see now that I'm not projected by the media I'm allowed to do it myself on is I don't need people to agree with me.

You know, I've never asked you if you agree with me or disagree with me, I don't mind what you guys put out, it doesn't matter because I know who I am.

And so it's been really, I've had a bit of a weird transformation and now I find myself liked which I'm deeply uncomfortable with.

And do you find it a bit especially controversial when there's people that are trying to get you cancelled or take away kind of your freedom of speech when they're also promoting freedom of speech?

Yeah right so oh you know we're so inclusive.

I'm thinking about your 2 counsellors here on the Isle of Man.

He looks like he maybe lives in his mum's spare room still time.

I'm assuming his sheets are pretty sticky and he's probably got a lot of tissues around his room.

I'm assuming his left wrist probably takes quite a bruising.

But Devon and the other 1 is someone, what's his name, Andrew.

So I don't really know him but I know he looks a bit like a thumb and I saw his picture next to Caroline Lucas so he's just sort of signaling that he's a better person because he doesn't eat meat.

So I guess what I see is that the people I'm up against are fairly weak now that we're much stronger but they talk about inclusivity.

We're an inclusive community so Katie Hopkins should be banned.

We are an inclusive community, so we are going to apply pressure on the lady that runs the Legion and tell her she is not going to get future funding and she is not going to get grants if she has Katie Hopkins.

If you have met lovely Linda at the Legion here at the Isle of Man, she is a bloody brilliant woman.

She fed people through lockdown, she's just bought new windows for the Legion, she runs cute little things so that people can, you know, have somewhere to go, the elderly.

And these boys, Devon and Andrew and others, have been so hideous to that woman.

And then the other thing I would ask and always say is, I totally get it, you hate me, No drama.

If that was a greenie and they were her, I'd be up those stairs.

So, anyway, is Why, why, why does 1 person think they have the right to choose what 200 other people go and listen to?

Don't like me, hate me, don't buy ticket, no worries.

But why are you trying to, doesn't matter about me, why are you trying to stop them?

And what you'll be aware of, and others out there who've been cancelled will be aware of is it is always 1 or 2.

They say, I speak for most of the community, it's 1 or 2, and they have a weird power because people are so scared of them, people are scared of the mob.

And what do you see within your biggest issues with society at the minute?

to be this weird kind of staunch conservative, like, oh, I love law and order, I love a rule, I'm a military person, you know, rah, rah, rah.

I find that really odd, to be honest, because you were very conservative.

But I think I was actually staunch, like, let people live their lives, don't mess with them.

But okay, by the rules and that will happen.

Let everyone do what they, you wanna identify as a woman, brilliant.

You do it, I will help you, I will support you, I will say you look nice, but don't ask me to believe what you believe, fine.

I want everyone to be as free as they want to be and have all the choices they want and the only thing that really makes me start to get, you know, like I get, which is kind of physically angry, is people trying to stop people doing stuff.

You can't do this, you must, here's a rule about this, it's 20 miles an hour now, now you have to pay a fine to do this.

So you've got a suit on that your mum probably bought for you from Debenhams?

Don't tell people what to do, let them be.

Well, either I'll be shot dead on the street, which would be, you know, just a blessing for everyone, I'm sure.

And the witch is dead, no doubt, would trend again, I'm sure, in the charts.

But, you know, I am so lucky, like I'm now 48.

Most people think I've been 60 for about the last 30 years.

Like my epilepsy back in the day and my seizures were getting to the point it was massive and they used to dislocate my arms.

And so it was kind of said that a seizure would get me, that was the prediction.

And then I had this massive surgery when I was about 38, so about 10 years ago.

So I don't have a top of my head anymore and my epilepsy was cured by this huge brain surgery and so I'm already on, because I've beaten my 2 years, I'm already on this kind of extra time And then also because I had everything taken, all my jobs, my house, they came for my kids.

Lawfare, endless lawfare, so that you have to fight court case after court.

If you perceive today, if you perceive in your heart that I've seriously harmed you with my speech, you can sue me tomorrow according to British law.

And that's the law that was made just for me.

So everyone I'd ever talked about that perceived I'd harmed them came for me.

Did that all just kick off at once, a load of allegations?

As soon as 1, they made a new law up, everybody got in the line.

So until I went bankrupted myself, they wouldn't go away.

My kids' social services had called on them that I'm abusive.

So they all have different names to me and they all go to school that I don't go, never go to their schools, not once, not ever.

And then obviously all my jobs were taken, well got rid of very quickly.

And then a couple of jihadis came to chop my head off.

So it's been, I mean I make light of much of it because you have to.

But that's very hard to go through for anyone, no matter how tough you say you are.

And I don't talk of it because I have no sympathy or pity for myself, I don't.

If you put yourself out there, suck it up.

You stay home, shut up, do nothing, you'll be alright.

And I'm on extra time and because I don't have those things, the house, I don't have a bank account, not allowed on Twitter, not allowed on PayPal, I'm super free.

Would you do everything again and still have...

Imagine not being able to advertise what you're doing.

Imagine you're not allowed on any regular media, I'm not.

I'm banned from all media and mainstream.

I'm not allowed to tell anyone what I do, really.

I have to be a joker and get my way around it, which I've done.

And I imagine putting events on and them selling out, just like that.

I sometimes say hello, but if some of my friends are racing bikes, I'm like, just tell them to look after them.

Yeah, because I remember once when I was about like 8 or so, we went over the ferry bridge and I didn't say hello to the fairies.

And mum and dad are like, you've got to blame.

So I believe in all sorts of things and I believe anything that's positive and lovely, I love it.

So I want to go to the ferry bridge, say hello to the fairies and thank them for letting me do this and then I'll go to the Wirral and then we've sold out 2 nights at the Wirral.

Fantastic and then when does your tour end?

Does it until November, last date in November and then we're already and that's the other thing is I'm really beating a path to have venues that have got a spine and will hold.

I lost 30 venues last tour because they just got scared and ran away.

Venue Managers want to do it, councils will come along and take their funding.

So I'm making spaces that have a spine like Linda that will hold so that there'll be places people can still gather in the future.

So yeah 2024 is already in place, silly cat or Katie Hopkins silly cat and I'm excited for that.

Oh, so yes, I promised last night I would.

I don't know if Linda can handle it, but I want to be back here.

And my dream would be, wouldn't it be great if we could get all the arseholes off of the Isle of Man.

Speaker 1: I love it. And I love this moment. I feel so lucky to do what I do. Imagine not being able to advertise what you're doing. Imagine you're not allowed on any regular media, I'm not.

I'm banned from all media and mainstream. I'm not allowed to tell anyone what I do, really. I have to be a joker and get my way around it, which I've done. And I imagine putting events on and them selling out, just like that. And It's not about me, it's about the audience.

What an amazing time to be alive. I just love it. I love it. I'm excited.

Speaker 0: So you're going off tonight to go to the Wirral.

Speaker 1: So I'm going off now to go to the ferry bridge. Because there's a ferry bridge here, right?

Speaker 0: There is, yes.

Speaker 1: And you go over the ferry bridge

Speaker 0: and you say... Have to say hello to the ferries.

Speaker 1: Hello, ferries. What do you say?

Speaker 0: I, Well, I'm a bit different. I sometimes say hello, but if some of my friends are racing bikes, I'm like, just tell them to look after them.

Speaker 1: Or I just thank them sometimes. You have a little chat.

Speaker 0: I do have a little chat with the fairies.

Speaker 1: Do you say, can you look after my mates on the bikes?

Speaker 0: Yeah, I do. And then other times, I just thank them after. So yeah, everyone's different though. Some people just say hello, but

Speaker 1: I do. No, I love it. And that's just what I'm saying. But you go and you thank them.

Speaker 0: Yeah, because I remember once when I was about like 8 or so, we went over the ferry bridge and I didn't say hello to the fairies. We got a flat tyre just up the road. And mum and dad are like, you've got to blame.

Speaker 1: So I believe in all sorts of things and I believe anything that's positive and lovely, I love it. So I want to go to the ferry bridge, say hello to the fairies and thank them for letting me do this and then I'll go to the Wirral and then we've sold out 2 nights at the Wirral.

Speaker 0: Fantastic and then when does your tour end?

Speaker 1: Does it until November, last date in November and then we're already and that's the other thing is I'm really beating a path to have venues that have got a spine and will hold. I lost 30 venues last tour because they just got scared and ran away. People don't have a spine. Venue Managers want to do it, councils will come along and take their funding. So they all pull just like this.

So I'm making spaces that have a spine like Linda that will hold so that there'll be places people can still gather in the future. So yeah 2024 is already in place, silly cat or Katie Hopkins silly cat and I'm excited for that.

Speaker 0: Are you coming back here?

Speaker 1: Oh, so yes, I promised last night I would. I don't know if Linda can handle it, but I want to be back here. There's something about this place. And my dream would be, wouldn't it be great if we could get all the arseholes off of the Isle of Man. And, you know, Devon, bye!

Andrew, bye! All the people who want to control anybody, get them off and just pile this place on with good people who want everyone just to be as happy as they could be. You know, Wouldn't that be brilliant? Take over the island, say hello to the fairies. Find some three-legged men.
