Former billionaire, Sam Bankman-Fried, saw a meteoric rise as crypto's golden boy and an even more spectacular fall from grace as his $32 billion cryptocurrency exchange, FTX, collapsed in a matter of days. Elon Musk and Tesla could emerge as winners from the UAW strikes against Detroit automakers Ford, GM, and Stellantis. Thousands of union workers are striking at the plants of the Detroit Three  - as the three legacy automakers are called. The intensity and nature of the strikes are unlike any other in American automotive history. The United Auto Workers have made a list of demands even its president Shawn Fain calls audacious. Among other things, they want a 40% increase in wages and a four-day 32 hour work week. That would bring all- in-hourly labor costs to more than double what they are today according to analysts. However, legacy manufacturers are already having trouble competing with Tesla's manufacturing costs and selling price.

Why Factories Are Coming Back To The U.S.

CNBC Marathon explores how Tesla, Rivian and Dodge’s new electric vehicles are transforming the automotive industry.

Over the past decade, Dodge has dug deep into its performance car heritage and become a brand known for brash American muscle cars with supercharged V-8 engines and ridiculous amounts of horsepower. But tightening regulations, rising fuel prices and the rise of the SUV are putting the squeeze on Dodge's so-called “brotherhood of muscle.” It recently debuted the Charger Daytona SRT EV, an electric car that looks a lot like its popular supercharged Challenger and Charger. Will Dodge fans or EV buyers want it?

Five years after Elon Musk first announced the Tesla Semi, it’s finally hitting roads. CNBC visited Pepsi’s Frito-Lay facility in Modesto, California, where it is using the new electric trucks, to see whether the Semis live up to the hype.

A new electric vehicle company hopes to take on Tesla with its outdoor adventure trucks and SUVs. And its deal with Amazon to build 100,000 electric delivery vans could help it succeed. Founded in 2009, Rivian is focusing on upscale electric trucks and SUVs with an emphasis on outdoor adventure. CNBC's John Rosevear calls them the "Patagonia of electric vehicles." Last month, Rivian and Amazon rolled out the first of the electric vans. They are starting to deliver packages in a handful of cities, including Seattle, Baltimore, Chicago and Phoenix.

After manufacturing's 40-year cycle of decline in the U.S., officials in Washington are trying to bring it back. This move could be a boom or bust for huge swaths of the American Midwest. This region once dominated the auto industry before rising global trade and automation sent domestic manufacturing employment into a tailspin. U.S. leaders hope that new laws such as the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will help businesses create the green manufacturing jobs of the future.

CNBC Marathon explores how the cellphone market is transforming.

Made in China. It’s a common phrase known by many. Cellphones, TV screens and game consoles are just some of the millions of electronics manufactured and imported from China to the U.S. daily. China has controlled the smartphone manufacturing market for years. While some industries, like the semiconductor industry and the EV battery market, are scrambling to build new factories across the U.S., tech giants like Apple and Google are not making the same effort to do that. CNBC explores why tech giants produce phones abroad and whether it makes sense to move production to America.

Dumb phones, once considered outdated, are still prevalent around the world, making up about a quarter of mobile phones actively in use. While affordability in developing countries is a significant reason for their continued use, there could be an unexpected but potential rise in use among younger generations conscientious about the potential smart phones could have on mental health. While Nokia and Motorola are still some of the biggest dumb phone makers in the world, Punkt. and Light are two start-ups betting on the resurgence in popularity.

For years, BlackBerry was the most popular smartphone brand in the U.S. After failing to adjust to the rapidly-changing industry and falling to competitors like Apple and Google, the company pivoted to an entirely new direction. Now, it’s focused solely on software and cybersecurity — trying to leave the iconic cellphones in the past. CNBC visited BlackBerry's Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Center and interviewed CEO John Chen to see what the company is up to now.

How The Cellphone Market Is Transforming | CNBC Marathon

It took seven years for Tim Cook to visit India again after traveling to the fast-growing country in 2016. Last April, the Apple CEO visited New Delhi and Mumbai to open two flagship stores, one in each city.

"Apple CEO Tim Cook actually traveled to India earlier this year to be in attendance for the opening of those two stores out in India, largely because of the massive opportunity that he sees out in India," said Angelo Zino, a senior analyst at CFRA Research. "In many respects, we are believers that India is going to represent a similar opportunity to China, and they also kind of represent very similar markets in nature."

Apple has been manufacturing older models of iPhones in India since 2017. In 2022, Apple began making the iPhone 14 in India, which was seen as a big shift in its manufacturing strategy. That year, about 3.5% of the world's iPhones were made in India. Apple eventually wants to manufacture 25% of the world's iPhones there.

"The major factor behind Apple's decision to diversify their production was they saw the impact of some of these disruptions in China that had to do with their Covid zero policy and a recognition of how vulnerable they were if they didn't have kind of a broader supply base, " said Willy Shih, Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School. "Without that broader supply base, they had production shortfalls which impacted their sales, which they might not have suffered as much had they had multiple sources."

Moving more iPhone manufacturing from China to India sounds like a good idea on paper. In the real world, it's plagued with serious challenges — finding talent, building out infrastructure and navigating a patchwork of regulations. Apple declined to CNBC's request for comment.

American Airlines, United and other U.S. airlines have been updating their fleets to provide better wifi. Delta has spent over $1 billion retrofitting its planes to bring free wifi to its customers.

The airline is using Viasat, one of the leading providers of satellite internet, to deliver Wi-Fi on board.
Viasat recently launched a new satellite with faster speeds and more capacity, which the company says will help keep up with the growing demand for the airline industry.

OpenAI, which Elon Musk helped to co-found back in 2015, is the San Francisco-based startup that created ChatGPT. The company opened ChatGPT up for public testing in November 2022. In under a week, the artificial intelligence model amassed over a million users, according to OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman. By the end of January, ChatGPT was averaging about 13 million visitors per day. In a Dutch factory, there’s a revolutionary chipmaking machine the whole world has come to rely on. It takes months to assemble, and only one company in the world knows how: Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography. 

CNBC got an exclusive tour inside ASML’s cleanrooms to see how these $200 million EUV systems print minuscule designs on advanced microchips using exploding molten tin, the flattest surface in the world, and light so narrow it’s absorbed by air. 

Once ASML is done building and testing an EUV lithography machine, it’s so big that it needs to be disassembled and loaded on 20 trucks or three 747s for shipment. Only five customers can afford EUV machines, the biggest being TSMC, Samsung and Intel - and ASML export controls keep ASML from sending any to China. 

Here’s a rare, inside look at how nearly 800 suppliers come together to create the technology required to print every advanced chip powering the digital world, from data centers to iPhones.
