As you know, BTS has been smashing records on Spotify lately, and some people in the West are trying to invalidate their success by blaming cultural imperialism. They claim that because BTS is from South Korea, their music is automatically inferior. But is this really the case? Let's take a look and see!

Billboards, Spotify, and other platforms filter streams.

They said it's an effort to measure actual popularity of a song by counting unique bodies or unique humans instead of the volume of streams.

They apparently learned of how fans of Asian acts mass stream and mass buy CDs.

But are they really measuring a song's actual popularity or is this just an effort to outsmart K-pop, P-pop, J-pop and other Asian pop fans whose loyalty support became so powerful, their favorites managed to outsell Western artists with support of big labels and US mainstream media.

The truth is that while streaming is heavily filtered, radio spins are not.

While streaming is decided and actually done by fans, radio plays are decided by radio station owners and DJs.

BTS' Dynamite topped the Spotify charts on its launch date with 12.6 million streams, but they were only credited with a little less than 7.8 million streams.

Why are they filtering streams and are they doing it the right way?

To understand what happened, let's go back to Psy.

When Gangnam Style came into the US, it was welcomed with open arms.

It was fun, Funny, and to be honest about it, played on Asian stereotype.

A middle-aged man dancing and dressed funny.

It wasn't a threat to Western pop, it was just a novelty.

But when BTS came along, they were actually entertained at first, but also mocked because they were a boy band, and worse, an Asian boy band.

So they were simply used as ratings bait.

Until without US mainstream media support, they started clocking in numbers so high, they dwarfed some western artists with millions of marketing and production budget behind them.

What's worse is that the US started hearing their discography, and they are not about sex and drugs and this is or how dope they are.

So when SB19, Blackpink, 17, and BTS were nominated in Billboard's 2021 Top Social Award, it became very, very clear.

And the big music labels don't want that.

Because while big music agencies own mainstream influence, Social media is where fans, the ones that actually matter, can even the playing field.

It became clear they can't stop fans from streaming, posting about their favorites on social media, creating content for their favorites, and doing just about anything to support their favorite.

The mob was threatening their dominance and it was way too powerful, too big, and too strong.

So they did the only thing they could do.

Fans of Asian pop played a game the West designed, the West decided to stop counting the points.

As fans organized themselves to mass stream their favorite group songs by hundreds of copies of their CDs, learned what they can do to make sure that their purchases and streams count, and did it over and over again, Spotify and Billboard called that play inflation.

Spotify now capped the number of songs or number of streams that will count into the song's chart position in any 24-hour period.

Billboard explicitly stated only 1 stream per week and 1 sale per week will be counted.

Labels were actually paying DJs to give songs of their artists more spins.

When that was declared illegal, it took another form.

Now labels develop quote-unquote relationships to different radio stations so their artists get spins whenever a new song is released.

So it is still payola, it's just much more sophisticated, and they don't put a cap on it.

And the other thing is that, isn't it supposed to be the fans that are supposed to matter here?

So, if they're listening to it, why not count it?

Spotifycharts.com actually said charts are generated using a formula that protects against artificial inflation of chart positions.

Billboard tweeted and wrote about it, but neither reveals their exact formula.

Okay, so I do understand the sentiment of Spotify and Billboard.

When 10 people stream 1 song 100 times a day, it can't be the same weight as 100 people streaming the song once a day.

But there is the other side of the argument.

Does a casual listener weigh as much as a fan?

If I leave my Apple Music on a playlist and get pushed new songs I don't end up liking, Does that count the same way a fan stream does?

Now, some argue that streaming a song over and over again or buying multiple copies of a CD is no different from what fans used to do in the 60s.

They used to go to record stores and they would buy multiple copies of that album because they want to inflate the numbers.

It's also no different from calling the DJ over and over again in a radio station to request a certain song just so they could make it appear as if the song is really really popular.

It's just that now it is done in a global stage.

So Billboard wants to put a stop on it early, control it early, but it is not well thought of.

Number 1, there are people who like streaming just a few artists.

Should their favorites be punished for it?

Not just by not counting the stream into the chart, but also by not giving them their rightful payout.

Number 2, paid accounts should be able to have their streams counted at least for payout because they are verified users.

You can't ask for a credit card from a bot.

1 paid account should be assumed to be valid.

Number 3, If the objective is to count unique listeners, shouldn't there be a better way to track radio based on listeners?

There are some radio stations or radio shows that are more popular than the others and yet every spin weighs the same.

Shouldn't there be a cap on radio spins that will be counted too?

If radio shows claim to be relying on requests, then there should be a more accurate way of counting requests.

With how advanced programming is, I am sure someone can write a code people can use to enter their request, and a code that will count unique entries only.

I also think that the key lies in longevity.

If weeks pass and streams are still strong, it is 1 sign that the streams are legitimate.

How that will be incorporated in the charts and in the payout, I'm not sure.

But punishing all artists just because they want to invalidate the loyalty of fans and their favorite Asian artist doesn't seem to be reasonable and fair.

It isn't just about melodies and beats and lyrics.

It's about the connection between the art, the song, and the fans and the artist.

It isn't enough anymore for artists to come out with a CD every 3 or 4 years and then go incognito in between.

This world of interconnectedness has reshaped the way that they live their lives, it has reshaped the way that they live their lives, it has reshaped the way that they consume their art, and it has reshaped their expectations.

They want depth, they want connection, and whoever gives it to them must be rewarded.

And yes, we do need to ensure that charts are not manipulated.

It is but right for us to continuously re-examine how we're actually counting and measuring the popularity of a song and the success of an artist.

But we should actually look at it in a holistic kind of way, instead of just picking and choosing the aspects or segments of it that we will change.
