But the question towards the end was, how do you officiate an open water swim, which I think is an excellent question.

And so today we'll focus on officiating an open water swim and what you can do to hold your own event.

This is an event you see a number of swimmers swimming.

It is not a pool, so sometimes these athletes bump into 1 another.

In general, we have swimmers and we have officials.

Officials can be in a boat, they can be in various kayaks, etc.

And in general, we always expect or we always would like to hope, that the head official, and there could be more than 1 official, there could be 10 officials, there could be as many officials as you'd like, are usually in a bright shirt, maybe yellow, maybe orange, maybe light green, in order so the swimmers can always see the referee.

And the very important thing for any official to do is before the race, you talk with the swimmers and you ask them, please swim responsibly and safely.

Now, most of the swimmers swim side by side or behind 1 another.

That's our fundamental open water swimming environment.

Whether they're together, whether they're slow, whether they're fast.

Some people lift up their head to look forward.

But most people are swimming freestyle, and you can see some officials or some media people in very large buoys.

These buoys can be a turnaround buoy, where you swim around the buoy, or a buoy can be a guide buoy.

A guide buoy is simply a buoy that you pass.

The first rule is impeding, and the second rule is unsportsmanlike conduct.

There are generally only 2 rules there and I'll explain.

First, impeding and secondly, unsportsmanlike conduct.

You swim together, you swim in a group, you sprint, you lift up your head, you finish.

And you as an official, you as a race director have to be aware of all of these different types of swimming.

Now, we love it when 2 swimmers are swimming side by side.

They're swimming hard, they're swimming long, and That's the beauty of the sport.

Impeding means to interrupt or to disturb the other swimmer.

Now, in general, when you have 2 swimmers swimming together, there's no problem.

They could be swimming almost perfectly together.

And this scenario is what happens when a lot of people do something.

This is actually at a World Championships.

This is a German swimmer in black, this is a Brazilian swimmer in green, and this is an American swimmer in white.

What was happening was the buoy, the turn buoy, was over to the left of the screen.

And the athletes were all fighting for position to get around the buoy.

So the German swimmer was swimming to her right.

The Australian swimmer was swimming to her left, the Brazilian swimmer was swimming faster, and the American was swimming a little bit slower.

So in this scenario, how do you call the race?

So in this case, we would only say that the Australian swimmer is impeding or disrupting or bothering the American swimmer here.

She actually took an arm stroke, this is the Australian woman's arm, and she actually had her arm or hand on her head, as you can imagine in freestyle stroke, the next moment her hand went down and this swimmer went down.

This swimmer here was not impeding in any way.

She was swimming normally, and these people in front of her may have slowed down and she wasn't hitting anybody.

The German swimmer, this is up to the interpretation of the referee.

Now in general, if you're swimming together, that's fine.

If let's say this person on the right, this person here, swam at an angle, so let's say she started to swim in this direction.

If she swam in this direction at more than 45 degrees, so if she took an immediate right-hand turn, a left-hand turn, and she went into this swimmer, that would be a 90-degree turn.

But if she swam at an angle, let's say it was 10%, let's say it's 20%, It is not an impeding if she was in the lead.

Now, if I'm a referee and I'm looking at these 2 swimmers, they're equal.

And so, if this swimmer here swims into this swimmer here, so the right swimmer hits the left swimmer, this is impeding, it's disrupting.

However, if this swimmer was, let's say, a half a meter ahead, she was a half a meter ahead, if she were a half a meter ahead, and she was swimming toward the left, it would be okay.

It would be the responsibility of the swimmer behind to swim around her.

So if a swimmer is in the lead, they can swim wherever they want.

If a swimmer is behind, they have to be very careful what they're going to do.

Impeding comes when the 2 swimmers are roughly in the same position and 1 swimmer swims into another.

So this swimmer and this swimmer, they were roughly together, and this swimmer, for whatever reason, she swam actually into her and actually over her.

The German swimmer is somewhat ahead of the American girl.

So this is the German girl in black, and she was slightly ahead of the American, so it was okay for her to swim in the direction, and the Brazilian swimmer is not involved in this situation.

So This is a classic picture, a standard photo of impeding.

When you are impeded, the referee has a yellow flag and he has a red flag.

In this particular case, he may have given a yellow flag to the German swimmer, But he probably gave a red flag to the Australian swimmer.

So the referee, this is the referee, this was actually a photo from the Olympics.

In the cases, he can give 1 yellow flag, you see the numbers here.

This is the race number of the individual swimmer.

So I think this is probably the number 15.

So in this particular case, the referee would have given the number 15.

He would have shown the swimmers a number 15.

And in the case of the German swimmer, he probably would have given a yellow card and in the case of an Australian swimmer, he probably would have given a red card.

So the referees have a variety of equipment with them.

Red flag is an immediate disqualification.

It is a DQ, they have to be disqualified immediately.

The swimmers under World Aquatics rules must leave, immediately leave the venue.

In the case of a yellow flag, let's say the German swimmer, she may have received a yellow flag in this case, but in that case, she can continue swimming.

If she got another yellow flag, then that would be a red flag.

If you receive a red flag, you must stop swimming and leave.

An official has his basic tools, our yellow flag, a red flag, some sort of radio.

And the radio you can see with an earpiece, a whistle, and then the number of, and the race numbers of all the athletes.

He has the radio because in this particular case, he gave a yellow card, a yellow flag, to swimmer number 7.

And after he has given this yellow flag or red flag to a particular swimmer, number 7, number 13, number 20, it doesn't matter, He calls this information to another referee who is writing down all of this information.

You can see this is another referee, Usually you have a head referee and an assistant referee.

And with all the swimmers, he will then understand that in this particular case, swimmer number 7 was given a yellow flag and he writes it down.

He also writes it down in case there is a protest.

So he'll write down yellow flag, swimmer number 7, and the time that that happened.

So let's say this case happened 15 minutes after the start of the race.

He would then write, let's say the German swimmer is number 7, number 7 received the yellow flag at 15 minutes.

He would then write if it was so the case, Australian swimmer, let's say number 15 received the red card at the 15 minute mark.

Now in large races, there are usually 2 or 3 or even 4 boats of officials.

And each of the officials in each of the boats is in a different location.

And that's why you want to also have all the referees using a radio system so they can understand what is going on throughout the race.

This swimmer in the white cap at the very last stroke at the Rio Olympics swam over the Italian swimmer.

This is her black cap and this was also an impeding and she was given a red flag and was disqualified.

Un-sportsmanlike conduct is when an athlete punches or kicks or elbows or pulls back a swimmer.

Usually number 2 rarely occurs, very, very rarely.

Most of the swimmers, even at the Olympics or World Championships, number 2 very, very rarely occurs.

It has happened in Olympic and World Championship history, but very rarely.

Impeding, number 1, is almost 99% of the time, the rule that is called by the referee.

Now, there was a very important thing that the referee has and that is his or her whistle.

Because when you have a situation where there's many, many swimmers together, you know, in this situation or in this situation, the referee can blow the whistle and he or she can point to the athlete and all of the athletes know where the referee is and he can just give a warning whistle.

So in addition to having a yellow flag and a red flag, you can also have a warning whistle.

A warning whistle is when the referee thinks there might be a chance of an infraction of a yellow flag or red flag, then he will blow his whistle, point to the swimmers, and they will separate.

So A whistle is blown many, many times in Olympics or World Championships or European Championships or Pan Pacific Championships or South American Championships or Asian Championships.

What is the normal reaction or what will be the you know the the the rules for the athlete to react.

Because number 1, he's focusing on the swim.

He's not, how will the person receive, hey, you are having a yellow card, okay?

So he will not, she will not stop, and hey, what color is my card?

Yeah, So in all sports, the swimmers or athletes, in this case, the swimmers, Their responsibility is to pay attention to their race and pay attention to the referee.

So if the swimmer says or believes, I didn't see the referee.

There's no way, he did not blow a whistle, he did not give me a yellow card, he did not give me a red card, he did not put up my flag.

This is the responsibility of the swimmer.

So, just like in the game of soccer or basketball, you can't ignore the referee.

And the referee will hold this flag up, he will blow the whistle and he will hold the number up for a long time, maybe 2 minutes, maybe 3 minutes.

So not only does the swimmer know it is his or her number, but all the other swimmers around will know.

So in this particular case, the referee blew the whistle, the referee's boat is maybe 10 meters from these swimmers, and He put up the number 15.

So this Brazilian swimmer, this German swimmer, this American swimmer know, and all the other swimmers know, it wasn't them.

And each of the swimmers knows what their race number is.

This is why we write it on their hand and we put it on their shoulder.

But you asked a very good question, and this is why in the beginning of the race, before the race has even started, the referees gather all of the athletes together, and they explain what will happen.

So before the athletes get into the water, the head referees make an announcement and explain, this is what your responsibility is, is to swim in a respectful and safe manner.

And then he will explain, If I blow a whistle, if I show a number, if I have a yellow flag or red flag and it's your number, it is your responsibility to get out.

And so, you can see here, this is a referee.

He will also be explaining to all of these people with a horn exactly what he expects these swimmers to do.

So at the start of the race, we'll go back here.

The referees talk to all the swimmers even before they get into the water.

Now at the Olympics or World Championships, you have a ready room.

You have a room in the swim venue, and that's where the finalists or semi-finalists or even the preliminary heats, they gather.

Maybe you're checking their swimsuits, if they're regulation swimwear.

But in open water, we don't have a room because everything we do is outside, although sometimes there are tents.

And therefore, the referees explain the rules very clearly.

And in international races, where it could be in the Spanish language, it could be in the French language, it could be Japanese, Chinese, Talago, it doesn't matter.

In an international field, there will be some athletes who won't understand everything, and this happens at every international championships.

However, it is either their responsibility or their coach's responsibility to educate them as to what is expected.

And so this we call this the pre race meeting or technical meeting and that is a very, very important part of the sport.

So the referees have to explain everything very clearly to all of the swimmers and in an international competition, all of the coaches.

And usually in international competitions, it is mandatory to attend a pre-race or a technical meeting.

In other words, all of the athletes gather and they are checked off.

So they say, oh, Thomas Lures from Germany, and he will say here, or Martin van der Regen from the Netherlands, and he will say here, Andy Donaldson from Scotland, here.

If you do not attend that meeting, then you're not allowed to swim.

So you must attend the meetings, it's mandatory, and there is a time when all the rules are very clearly explained.

But it's not that difficult because there's only 2 rules, very simple to understand.

Usually the important part or another important part of the pre-race or technical meeting is simply the explanation of the course.

This is a course that goes from point to point, maybe across a lake or across a river.

Or they will say the yellow buoys, you must make a right hand turn.

Or the orange buoys, you must make a left hand turn.

Usually the discussions center around not the rules, but the course.

So Anyway, you gather all the athletes before you talk to them then when they get to the Start of the race the referee's responsibility is to make sure that it is a fair start.

So in this particular case, the start of the race is at the shoreline, and this starter is checking with the official who is on the boat, and then he will make sure that all of these athletes give a fair start.

Now, It's also very good, and this is not a very clear picture, but it's a picture.

You see that in this race, the athletes are at the edge of the lake.

So they're not at the edge of the race, they're already in the water.

But these are safety officials, they have a, we call this a backboard.

That's in case any of the athletes get in trouble, they can rest on here or these people in the jet skis will take them to safety.

He's in yellow and we'll see what this is.

I remember in this particular case, you see very fast swimmers in the front, and then you see slower swimmers in the back.

And they have what we call toe floats, so a floating device, because they are not so fast swimmers, and this is a safety device for each individual swimmers.

In many races around the world, they either require or recommend swimmers to use these tow floats, but usually the fast swimmers are not swimming that, using those tow floats.

Very, very choppy in this section of the dam and it flattens out at about the 600 meter mark.

So once they get into that 600 meter mark, It's going to come down to the guys who are getting the break.

But Chip Peterson, he is really going with a high stroke rate, very similar to Ashley Trichell.

He is the training partner to Ashley Trichell as well.

The other thing we discussed last week was drafting.

And this swimmer is an excellent, excellent swimmer.

You can see that the leader is swimming very, very fast.

And this swimmer is swimming right in his draft and is conserving energy.

It's a classic, perfect drafting situation.

I'll just put just so you can see how much of an expert this person is for drafting.

It's going to come down to the guys who are getting the break, but Chip Peterson, he is really going with a high stroke rate, very similar to Ashley Trichell.

He is the training partner to Ashley Trichell as well, but Perry Wirtman has such a slow stroke rate here, he's not even working his legs.

This is Chip Peterson, an American who is a world champion in the 10 kilometer.

I think about maybe 8, 9 years ago, he's now a physician.

He was a gold medalist in the 2016 Olympics.

But you could just see, and they swam against each other for many years and you could see just how Smart a swimmer fairy is

either danger man Yeah, but Matthew Meyer is right on his legs and sitting on his shoulder is Chad Ho.

Of that chop, and that is something very difficult to continue with because that makes sighting of the finish and the line that you want to take a particularly hard 1 to follow.

But the thing to the matter is if we take a look at our, whereas if you take a look at how the man up front, Chuck Peterson was striking, that's very quick.

Chad Ho has very much got that same kind of lazy stroke.

You could tell the long distance swimmers who know that it's about energy expenditure and the way that you spend it all.

Bruce Fordyce, 9 times comrades, 1 who always used to say, you've got a pack of cards, that's your energy.

And you give away those cards very grudgingly and you only really give them away in the last quarter of the race because then you have to have many left to give away.

I've always been concerned about the athletes or swimmers or cyclists that do well in the stop, you know, that they burn out and always have been to win.

Well Peterson is up at the front there although right now it would be a fairly big blanket but you can cover them with a big blanket at the moment all 4 of them as we predicted the 4 names that we've been counting all weekend long on together.

And that's the interesting thing for me is that he's prepared to go out and make the the swimming there often.

This particular race is now reached about halfway.

And you can see the leader chooses a different direction.

So he's gonna go off to the right and Ferry Workman, the world champion is gonna go off to the left.

So they both believe that they have the best course.
