You're coming from Israel and introduce yourself and

Yeah, basically I'm not a swimmer and I wanted to buy this thing for myself.

And I have a computer degree, I have an MBA from the US and stuff like that.

So I wanted to find something for myself because I wanted to learn more about swimming.

The books and the coaches were not profound enough for me to explain how I should progress.

So I wanted to measure the efficiency of every stroke, okay, not to focus on some superfluous things like high elbow or something like that.

I want to measure whether this high elbow generates a better speed, okay, And I couldn't find it.

And so then I read a lot of research and then I found a couple of approaches that were simple enough and I talked to the scientists and my first partner was from Germany.

And then we found our Italian partners who are part of engineering company.

And basically, it's a portable digital velocity meter.

And it gives you very detailed information about your swimming technique.

Very detailed information, very insightful information about every stroke.

Actually, understanding, we are not talking about symmetry, although our first paper was about symmetry in freestyle but we're not talking about that everyone should be symmetrical but understanding the difference in efficiency of your left and the right arm strokes give you and coaches a lot of information what's going on and if you get this information right after the swim you as a swimmer can relate to every stroke that you've just made.

And as a coach you can see and basically, you know, you can also overlay it with the video, but with video analysis you usually kind of focus on basic stuff, like body positioning or something like that, but you cannot measure the efficiency.

There are some people who are swimming not nice, but they're very efficient.

And some people who are, you know, the other way around, right?

And to be able to measure it within minutes and very quickly and efficiently from the financial standpoint, that's what we do.

So my SwimEdge swimming technique analysis.

So what we do is you put the sensor, you swim 1 lap, and let me just, that's how the sensor actually, This is the picture how the sensor looks on the body.

Now, we love the data and we can give you layers of structured information about every stroke, unique metrics that you wouldn't find anywhere else, and you can focus on analysis of every stroke, and you can see the graph of the speed changes.

At the same time, we can get the data in a way that is actually easy to understand, and also they don't overwhelm you.

Which is a basic comparison of the 2, 3 metrics for the left and right arm strokes, like distance per stroke, and time for left and right arm strokes.

And that already gives you a lot of insights.

Now, let me go straight to the key thing.

This is the how the speed, this graph, this is velocity change during 50 meter lap.

And because it's all digital, we know exactly which arm is working.

We don't measure the power or the velocity of the arm, we actually measure the velocity of the body when the arm is working.

Okay, so you can see from this graph, the blue is left And red is right, so it's like easy to remember.

So the speed changes during the left and right arm strokes are visibly different on this graph, right?

Now, what you can also see on this graph is that the right arm strokes when the person swims the second half, they are different from the first half, right?

They get more pronounced, more speed of fluctuation for the right arm strokes and that's basically because we asked this specific person to swim breathing to the right the first 25 meters and then he was breathing to the left.

Actually don't remember whether it was he or she.

But that's how detailed information we can see and what sort of issues that we can raise.

For example, we can see that the maximum speed for the left arm strokes is higher than the maximum speed for the right arm strokes.

And we can also compare the timing of each stroke.

That gives you a lot of insights on what to focus on.

Now, if we're talking about a lot of data and a lot of graphs, because this is all digital, we digitally slice the speed changes during all the left arm strokes and here they are and all the right arm strokes.

So this is basically the same graph but sliced and juxtaposed all the left arm strokes and all the right arm strokes.

So you can see the difference in the efficiency of the phases of the stroke.

And again, we are not focusing on how you bring, we don't see the person, we don't know how the arm enters the water, we know the efficiency of the work that, you know, left and right arm doing below the water when they move the person.

The bottom 2, left arm, right arm, is that from when the hand enters the water to when it exits or is it a complete cycle?

It's a complete cycle, that's a good question.

And actually because we have just 1 sensor, 1 sensor on the hips, it's actually the cycle starts and finishes when the hips rotate from 1 side to another.

And as you can see the timing of this like 1 second 1.2, that's, you know, 1 stroke, but we kind of juxtapose them on top of each other.

So we actually, because of that, you can actually see whether your hips are delayed, the hip rotation delayed, or about time when it's compared to the maximum speed, when the maximum speed occurs at the end of the push phase, right?

Now- the valley that is in the bottom of each of those graphs, the low part, that's probably when the body is most flat.

So when the hand, you know, when during the release phase and when the arm enters the water, the body decelerates, correct?

Some people start accelerating sooner, some people start accelerating later, when they close to the push phase and that you can see here.

Yeah, but basically you can see the difference in the magnitude of acceleration and deceleration of the body during each stroke.

And if you can remember the big events, like Olympic Games and stuff like that, you see the current speed from the competition that sometimes they show.

Usually, they show the average speed for the last 5 meters or something like that, because the current speed fluctuations are very, you know, they come very, you know, they change every hundreds of a second.

And for each stroke, the speed changes is like 30% of these, you know, the between maximum and minimum.

Let me quickly give you overview of the data that also we have.

So for each stroke, in addition to the graphs, we have a distance per stroke, minimum velocity, maximum velocity, timing for each stroke, left and right, and you also can see the dependency of the timing and the distance per stroke and stuff like that, these sort of important stuff.

But I don't want to overwhelm you with a lot of data.

We also give you very high level information for analysis.

So this is average data for the left, but not average average, but average for the left and average for the right arm strokes.

And that sometimes is important when you see that, you know, the distance per stroke on the right arms is like here 20% longer, you start to think what's going on, why is that?

If you see that the maximum speed is sort of 5%, this is this light orange stuff, you can see it.

And the minimum speed is also important to analyze because sometimes people over glide and there are some you know people who you know and there are some strategies when you should glide more there are some things that you should glide less and pick up the speed earlier, things like that, and also the average time.

So we can give you very high level on the left level analytics, not to overwhelm you with the data, but it's still very insightful when you compare left and right.

And this is the graph, all 4 of them from 4 different people, but they were swimming at exactly, more or less, the same speed.

So they were swimming 32 to 34 seconds, or 33 seconds for 50 meter lap.

They all are very different in consistency, in stability of the technique, in whether you have clear cut deceleration-acceleration pattern, or you have secondary deceleration, deceleration.

And you can find out why is that because of the elbow because of the palm rotation because of the kicks or body positioning or something like that.

So that sort of information that we give.

Now we can also, that's an example, right?

So you can analyze stroke patterns and stroke consistency.

Now, needless to say that we are a new company, we're just a startup, but at the same time we were very happy, fortunate, that 1 of our first users became Olympic champions in triathlon.

And because it's this is a German national team and what we've done for them because it's you know they used it for a few months, we decided not to change technique dramatically, but what we've done is we've analyzed with the coach what needs to be done for this person not to swim faster, because in triathlon swimming is the first event, right?

And you don't have to be the first, but you have to be in the first pad, okay?

But what we wanted to do is like for her to swim is with more or less the same speed, but spending less energy, conserving energy with the same speed.

So we decided to focus on issues that sort of made her fatigue during the swim.

And we've analyzed this and like her swim was more balanced.

Now what we also have done for the Israeli team, Paralympic team, we also been working with Paralympians, and as you can imagine, every swimmer is asymmetrical.

Okay, Sure, every person is asymmetrical, but for Paralympians it's even more so.

And to understand the root causes of this asymmetry is very important.

For example, we had a person with the amputee, like she didn't have some fingers on her right arm, and she didn't have part of her leg on the left arm, so you know, it's definitely imbalanced and stuff like that, and definitely shows that the quality of the right arm strokes was lower, the efficiency of the right arm stroke, but we've analyzed these root causes, and to do this what we've done is we've put the pedals, so we kind of equalize.

We put the pull buoy between her legs, so we've equalized that, like no kicks, just...

And we've analyzed whether the, you know, the efficiency would be more symmetrical, and it happens to be not that way, and it's like the problem was more in her brain, right, she didn't trust her right arm stroke, and she was...

And we've had, yeah, we've had more, more exciting findings like this, even more for, like, for example, people with cerebral palsy, because with cerebral palsy is like a person might be walking awkwardly or like very or what might not be able to walk but they move in the water and understanding the efficiency and how it changes because of the you know oxygen lack of oxygen and stuff like that it's very different from regular swimmer so we've done things like that.

Tell me a little more about the device you were showing it just for 50 meters, would it be, is that like the value of it or does it have to be worn for a whole practice or is that just too much data?

You can actually in the app, there is an app, MySwimEdge app, and you can download it and it's free of charge and you can see the examples of different swimmers just for you to see the information and to see whether this information would be valuable if you apply it to your swimmers.

But in the app, you can select whether it's 25 yards, 25 meters, or the 50 meter pool.

And we do 1 test, 1 lab, just 1 lab, because it's already enough information and what we do if we want to see hey what if the person is fatigued, we do 1 test or 2 tests right after the warm-up and then after the main set.

Or you can do 2 different tests at like 2 different speed levels to see the difference in the technique at like 100 meter pace or 400 meter pace.

You know if you do like 4 tests per person that's enough good enough diagnostics.

Now we do work with the national teams to do like more, because sensor could store whatever information and we have the special program to download this, but because of the a lot of data and ease of use of the app, we decided to focus on just 1 lab, because even for the Olympic champions, 1 lab for triathletes, So they swim distances, right?

Even for open water swimmers, that gives a lot of insights and information.

But sometimes national teams, there are some data scientists and they like data and you know we open to work with them but it's a special special You know project that we can work We can work on with them

Then you do you take the device off the swimmer and then you sync it to the phone or how does that work?

If I if a coach does the test the the coach takes the device off, he connects to the app, and in 30-40 seconds he gets the analysis.

That stays on the app and in the app, what's important from the commercial standpoint for the teams is that you can buy 1 sensor, but you can test many people and you can create sub accounts for different people.

For example, if you have like 5, 6 people that you want to keep the history on, you can create the sub accounts for them in there.

But it also like if you want to do a camp, swim camp, and you don't need to keep the history just because, you know, John and Josh and Stacia, whatever, and they, you know, you just need to give them the information.

You create a test account, sub-account, and then you do the, with them, and you can do with as many people as possible using this.

So it's sort of from the economic standpoint it's very easy to use and very inexpensive to use.

So basically we started, you know, getting our first customers like very end of last year and beginning of this year.

And so that's 20, 20, 24, yeah, basically 24, basically 24.

And we just, you know, received our certification, CE certification for Europe and for the US like in 23, I believe.

And you need that to be able to sell the device, which is certification?

Do you have distributors or how do people get it?

Yeah, they order directly from the company.

We also participate in some of the exhibitions, like organized by some, you know, or swim camps, like For example, the German national team, a couple of weeks ago, they had a big swimming clinic for the coaches.

It was actually a clinic for the coaches and swimmers.

They brought us and we tested a few people.

So this is the way we kind of started to do it and right now we position the sensor, we focus on the teams and coaches because it's like you know the information is quite you know very specific and they would be able to get it and understand it much better than you know individual triathlons.

But later on we definitely want to be to open up for the consumers and we want to enhance the automatic analysis not from the you know just numbers and graphs but recommendations suggestions based on these specific issues for the specific swimmer.

It's great to have a new tool in our toolbox.

And now you've chosen just to focus on freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly, all that is for another day.

Another day will be in December, we start in December because we start analyzing this with 1 of the national teams and we do like a project with them to analyze this, but definitely the algorithm is for the freestyle, because basically we know what to measure in freestyle and how to slice and dice it.

In terms of the breaststroke and butterfly, of course, like, you know, velocity is important, but there are some other issues that you want to track, and I didn't get, you know, I get different opinions from different coaches, what's important.

And, you know, so we are in the process of finding this, but it also can be used for the backstroke as well.

Because biomechanics is more or less the same, but left becomes right and the right becomes left, but like it's still doable.

But at the same time we understand that every person who wants to swim well needs to swim well freestyle.

And from the marketing perspective, you know, open water swimmers and, you know, triathletes are all swimming freestyle.

So that's why we kind of started with that.

We want to be video agnostic because different people use different video analysis.

But what's cool, we're also working on like decoupling this curve from the graph and that's another thing that we're testing with the T with the top teams.

So you can basically put it on the video and we'll see it.

The speed changes based on the video regardless whether it's underwater, over, or you know above the water video.

We're working on this just to get this data out and so you can use it.

But again, as I said, we don't want to focus on specific video platform.

We want to kind of be platform agnostic as far as video is concerned.

Are there some other people around the world doing some testing and measuring and research with this?

Yeah, I mean in different parts of the world and you know, I know 1 guy, but he's like, he's a coach in the swim club in the US but like he's a data scientist by day like And he actually said you know in my swim club We've agreed that I'm gonna be a data scientist for swimming so I've created specific, you know approach and agreed the approach of testing and measuring and doing some specific research and stuff like that.

But Mark, you asked about research, We've also done some research and publications, and we've done it several years ago.

Our first work received the best paper award in the conference on biomechanics, and it was double-blind.

Nobody knew us, we didn't know the guys, but it was, you know, the understanding the symmetry, not pushing to the symmetry, but understanding the difference in efficiency is very important.

We have also published our article in the American Swimming Magazine.

They like this idea and they published our article.

Definitely, I think for us it's important to be in the US.

We work in the US, we work with colleges, with the swim clubs, and definitely this is 1 of the key destinations.

I think for us, the European market and the US market are like 2 biggest markets for now.

And definitely we will be, you know, you know, I'll be there.

And because our team is, I'm in Israel, my co-founders are in Europe.

So we can, you know, cover, cover both of these areas.

If you're a coach at a school, or you coach a lot of kids that are aged 10, 12, 14, What are some of the big lessons that you learned that you should share with them as to how to better improve their swimming?

You know, kids are also, some of them, mathematical.

And for some of them, these graphs actually show exactly what they're doing.

Number 2, a lot of the coaches focus on what they see above the water.

The body positioning, how they, you know, high elbow during the release, entrance and stuff like that.

And kids actually focusing on this as well.

But helping them to focus on the, you know, below water phase is very important.

Another coach from the club told me, you know what, because I don't, I cannot test all the people, all the kids all the time.

For them, that's a fun part and they like it and they kind of there is like the line of kids who want to be tested and things like that and also you know because you can test you know at different speed, breathing to the right, breathing to the left, you do like 6 kicks, 4 kicks, and it's all exciting.

Or you can do open water breathing or no breathing.

And as you said, with pedals, no pedals, you can see the difference in the speed uptake.

And there is many, many games and exercises that you can do.

And kids appreciate the fact that the club invests in them in trying to help them to be better.

And of course in every club there are some kids who swim for the sake of swimming to be better, to be more healthy, and that's good, but some kids would like to progress and go into colleges, and for them, this little incremental knowledge and help can make a difference.

You need to train your mind and be smarter about swimming.

And then a lot of the skills with the literacy and the math and the graphing I think then would carry over to some of their schoolwork or the understanding physics and all the other important sciences there.

And I agree that It would be a great investment for the club or the school to get a device like this.

And then everybody is going to be able to focus and be a lot more scientific and smarter.

And then you can get monthly subscription depending on how many tests you want to do per month.

And for like 1 person or 2 people, maybe you get like For 20 bucks, you get like 4 or 5 tests per month, and that's enough.

But for the teams, we recommend unlimited.

It's still doable for the team, but it gives you great insight.

So Basically, $3.90 a sensor, and then up to $90 per month.
