You all are talking and just being so exciting and loud on socials.

And honestly, it's actually really like it's causing us to go like Super Saiyan 3 at this point because At the end of the day you have to remember at BuildSpace I'm just a human everybody who works here is just humans And I think it's really really cool to see you all vibing with a lot of our ideas.

You know, the banners that we put out, the wallpapers that we put out, the houses, everything.

I know we almost had like 7, 000s of new people join BuildSpace and it's like, it just makes us feel a little bit better knowing that we aren't like, just doing this for no reason.

And you know, I saw some crazy images on Twitter.

On the left I see like, Alterac College dorm setup, on the right you see the pro Alterac setup.

But yeah, we have all these setups happening.

We have all these people posting their setups with their wallpapers.

We have all these people who are posting their house names on Twitter, on LinkedIn, on Instagram.

I love to see the Instagram ones, I love to see the LinkedIn ones.

Across like 3 platforms people are actually like, across like 3 platforms people are actually posting this stuff.

Like I would not think that LinkedIn, people on LinkedIn would just post our banner, but it's pretty cool to see it happening.

You have to understand, everybody, we're in our office working on this shit, working on these wallpapers, working on these houses, working on all this.

So let me just tell you real quick, Here at Buildspace, a lot of the party does happen specifically on other social medias.

And I think it's up to you to find the party.

So real quick, the easiest place to find the party is Twitter.

Twitter is like 70% of people are like, a lot of the audience is on Twitter.

So the easiest thing is just to go on Twitter, search for BuildSpace and start following people.

So we started to amass a pretty big following on LinkedIn And it's been pretty cool to To kind of witness there.

So again, you have to actually put in some work to search for build space on LinkedIn and then follow some people Everyone's spamming X.

I'm calling it Twitter And then finally we have Instagram right Instagram is a platform where it's like I'll talk more about it I'll talk more about it today But again searching for build space seeing people posting about build space and following those people It's kind of up to you to go to the party You know what?

I mean like the party is not just gonna show up at your door You have to actually go knock on some doors, walk through some doors, and find the party.

The whole point of today's lecture is to actually is to actually get you all on the same page about your idea and what it means to have a good idea.

Real quick how many of you have an idea right now?

Like how many of you feel like you have a pretty solid idea of what you're working on?

0 being I have absolutely no idea, I have nothing.

My hope is most of you are at least around a

And my goal with this lecture is to actually get you closer to a 10 because you're probably closer to a 10 than you think.

If you're at 0, you're actually much closer to a 10 than you may think.

But I think remember, Almost all of you are at so many different starting points.

Some of you are just starting out with an idea.

Some of you have already thousands of fans on your idea.

But I want to quickly get some stuff out of the way about ideas.

And that's why I actually want to cover it here today.

Everybody gets stuck on this very first step which is the idea.

I'm gonna get started here just be very real with you all.

Ideas are extremely overrated And let me tell you why.

Ideas are literally just starting points.

Everybody thinks that an idea is this master plan the person has in their head that they bring to reality.

In the normal world, that's not really how it works.

In reality, ideas are often just starting points.

It's like you're going to go on this adventure, and you need a place to start the adventure.

Now, of course, there are some ideas which get you closer to the more advanced adventure.

But at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter too much.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you there aren't bad ideas and there aren't good ideas right but at the end of the day almost all ideas are similar to me they're just starting points right and again they're supposed to evolve like you have a Pokemon right you have to train your Pokemon your Pokemon evolves your Pikachu turns into a what does Pikachu turn into?

Your Pikachu turns into other things You know it's gonna evolve over time I want to I want to actually cover a couple of ideas that are I want to cover a couple of ideas in the real world and tell you a little bit about them.

Love it or hate it, Angry Birds was fucking everywhere when I was a kid, and it's actually still everywhere.

I used to love this game, right, as a kid, and I still played it, like, I played it on an airplane the other day it was pretty cool.

With Angry Birds can you guess which number game Angry Birds was for these developers who were making the game?

Which game do you think number game do you think it was in the chat tell me.

Now that doesn't mean the other 29 ideas were trash.

It means that the other 29 ideas led to this idea, the final idea that they kind of ended up on, which is Angry Birds.

I don't want you to think that these people spent, you know, worked on 29 vastly different ideas.

They worked on the same idea, which is we want to make fun mobile games, and their 30th idea actually worked out.

I'll give you a hint, his movie is playing right there.

Now, you know, I'm not like a massive Star Wars fan, but I appreciate Star Wars.

And I read George Lucas' book, his biography.

1 of the best biographies I've ever read by the way highly recommend It's called George Lucas a life and I always thought that Star Wars was this magical thing that popped out of this guy's head you know, he had this magical idea and and it and Sorry, someone in the chat just said I'm not gonna say it I'm closing chat you guys are distracting me but what's interesting about Star Wars is that he spent almost 5 years working on this script but What's important is that he would every week write some of the script and then every week show some of his friends.

For almost 5 years straight, this man did this, right?

It's pretty cool to think that he didn't just come up with this idea randomly in his head.

It started out as nothing more than actually the thing it started out was way worse by the way His first initial idea was way worse.

It was like a comedy about aliens, right?

And it's cool to see where he ended up nearly 5 years later This is a tough 1.

Remember, ideas are just starting points.

Oh wow, a lot of you got it, that's crazy.

He, This is 1 of his first designs for his Dyson.

Can you guess how many prototypes this guy had?

How many prototypes did he have for the Dyson that he just made in his garage and showed his like family and friends?

I Believe it's 3500 was the right number was the number of a Jeffrey you can confirm in the chat It was more than 3000 You have to understand that this guy started out with nothing more than an idea But over time he kept on working on the idea, kept on prototyping it and eventually, kept showing it to more people and eventually made it out.

the way, I'm not sitting here and telling you that this is how you make an idea successful.

What I'm getting at is this is how you push your idea forward.

Your ideas start off as nothing more than drawings, right?

Nothing more than like script titles, nothing more than like random games about birds being shot.

And over time, you have to trust the process.

And of course, the last 1, probably my favorite example of all time.

These are 2 guys that just wanted to sell some computers in their local neighborhood.

And nearly 40 years, 50 years later, nearly all of us have used or have heard of 1 of their devices.

This is Apple, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak.

So remember that these guys weren't- you have to understand here, this is actually like an important thing to note.

It's not like these guys literally said, hey, we are gonna fucking take over the world with computers, man.

No, it started off as something way dumber.

It was just like, hey, you know computers.

Let's see if we can make a couple thousand dollars off of computers.

And over time, things worked out for them, right?

Things kept evolving, and they kept evolving on that same idea of wanting to give people computers.

But this is by far my favorite example of all time.

I always go back to this example because it's like This is you have to know that the beginning of your idea is like almost the most innocent stage of your idea Where you're just having fun, right?

So just have fun And finally, I want to give you my personal story around my ideas and how these ideas have actually evolved in my life.

There's a lot of stuff in this story that I've never told publicly, so this should be fun.

A lot of you are currently at BuildSpace, right?

You're at this stream, you're listening to me, you're at BuildSpace right now.

And it seems like it's kind of successful, right?

Like, I don't know, what do you all think?

Maybe from the outside, maybe some of you think BuildSpace is kind of successful, maybe you think it's get in there, I don't know.

But no matter what you think, I hope that most of you feel like BuildSpace is doing something interesting, right?

This is a picture of me I took 4 and a half years ago.

4 and a half years ago, I got this haircut.

Everything was not going well in my life.

I was deep, deep, deep on the hunt for a great idea.

I was doing, I was like, I had a neckbeard and I was on this hunt.

I just, I was doing everything possible to figure out like, the next big idea for me to work on.

I used to post all my work on Instagram because I didn't know Twitter.

But I was working on this idea back then called Farza log, which was like a productivity app.

I didn't give a shit about productivity apps.

But here I was making this productivity app that would, you know, help you take notes about your life.

So I remember this is actually where BuildSpace kinda started in many ways.

It was me working on these dumb productivity apps at my house.

I was coding them, I was working on them, I was designing them and they were just trash.

I think that when I look back at that era, I was, by the way, I spent almost, it was like 4 months just like working on like a new idea every 3 to 4 days.

And I was trying so hard to find like a good idea.

Press 1 if you've ever tried to, if you're, if you think you're trying to find like a good idea right now, like that's kind of like what's holding you back.

Maybe like you just, you still like, Oh, like, I don't think I got that good idea yet.

That's actually the number 1 thing we hear at BuildSpace that you people don't know if their idea is good or not.

Well, remember what I told you just 10 minutes ago, ideas are just starting points, correct?

There's just such thing as a point where you begin.

So after 3 months of looking like this, you know, I was done.

After 3 months, I actually just said, fuck it.

I was like, this is so stupid, what am I doing?

And I did the thing that I was very excited about which was I wanted to open a school for kids So I literally opened a school for kids at my mom's house And the goal was to teach these kids how to code that was exciting to me like I loved teaching back then I loved You know Volunteering at schools to teach kids about these things and I thought it was like I thought it'd be really fun for me So I was like, okay fuck all these good ideas.

I'm going to actually just teach kids So I remember this is a tweet from a very long time ago August

Tiny experiment going to put these random good going to put these in residential mailboxes in the rich parts of town Let's see if parents even care and you know the thing what's written on here is hey I'm working on a school where I can I'll teach your kids how to code and I posted this I sent I had like 50 of these flyers I put out.

And you can do exclamation mark Farza by the way, in the chat, and it'll link you to this tweet.

But this is kind of like, This to me was the true beginning of BuildSpace, where I just decided that, fuck it, I'm gonna work on stuff that is exciting to me, I'm gonna iterate really fast, I'm just gonna have fun with it, and I'm not gonna try too hard to have a good idea.

And this is actually a video from, you know, 1 of my sessions with the students.

I was teaching at the time and I would bring all of his friends into Discord because I was trying, it was so hard to like, you know, get the parents, you know, to get their kids in true, but all these kids wanted to learn how to code from me.

So I would sit there in discord with Samir and I would teach these kids how to like do HTML CSS.

So again, this is almost like 4 years ago now, but this is how build space started, right?

But look how this is, this is where we, this is where we began.

So over time, I, things get a little more interesting, right?

I decide to Move out to San Francisco right and I this is what my setup looked like back then Where is Samir now Samir is 14 and the kid is...

I got this place in San Francisco and I was like, Alright, fuck it.

And at the time, I was actually browsing these Facebook groups with parents in it because I was in all these Facebook groups for parents because you know I don't have a kid myself I'm 28 right now and at the time I was 23 but I was browsing these Facebook groups and I wanted to kind of see if I can make something for parents right Because parents are the people I have to sell to.
