I think the first things first that I should kind of mention here is that last week was, I think I said this last week as well about last week being insane, but last week was truly insane Me and the team have been through all sorts of like Top programs throughout the world right like we've been to the YC's of the world we've been through the A16Z's of the world we've seen a lot of this stuff and we've just seen a lot of the top programs and this season of build space is truly unlike anything we have ever seen before.

It's not just like the number of ideas that we're seeing.

It's just the quality and the diversity of the ideas as well.

I mean, it's 1 thing to just have a bunch of people working on like a bunch of like random garbage stuff, but like you have so many people like working on truly interesting ideas, like I'm just curious, press 1.

If you saw something over the weekend or the week where you're like, damn, that's actually a fucking cool idea.

By the way, just for you all coming back from the ads just you all know when you get ads let me just tell you right now if you get ads I want you to go to YouTube because Twitch we can't control the ads so we're trying out YouTube as well and Rob has the link pinned to YouTube up there just so you know so we won't stop for ads anymore but next week we'll probably use YouTube for this week on Thursday but yeah it's pretty crazy like everybody's here pressing 1 and it's just a testament to how much good energy is around here.

I hear at BuildSpace, you have everything from soft driving go-karts to handmade desktop pets that sit on your desk and are really cute.

And I think there's a certain magic to having this many dreamers in 1 spot I think chances are My feeling is most of you would have never interacted with each other if you didn't gather here Which is because most of you are like I'm all over the world scattered across the world, right?

And it's been beautiful to watch engineers interacting with painters.

It's been beautiful to beautiful to watch game devs interacting with people working on these non-profits.

It's just like the diversity of the thought will lead you to push your idea.

I don't want you all to sit in this echo chamber where everybody's like, this thing good.

I think it's pretty interesting to have people that are less connected to your idea because they'll push your idea in new ways.

And you don't want to be in an echo chamber, right?

I've been in many echo chambers and, it's, it's not that fun.

Like you want people who are like kind of pushing your thoughts or challenging your thoughts.

So many of you like just straight up trusted us, Tweeted out your idea slide.

Like so many of you pushed yourself to do that.

And I just want to say thank you for that.

But to be honest, to be honest, it's really not all going that well.

And I got some bad news for us here today, actually.

It's a little bit embarrassing, to be honest.

But we've been having some issues internally actually.

And we didn't expect these issues to happen.

We hope this isn't going to impact the season.

But I think here's a statement from Jeffrey, who's our colleague at Buildspace, to give you all a statement here.

I'd like to take a moment to apologize that we haven't gotten back to all of your tags and mentions for your nights and weekends season 4 ideas.

What happened was I'm reaching out to 20, 000 builders working on their ideas.

Tossing it around me, and they call him the nicest person on the team.

I think that I'm, you know, shout out to Jeffrey for giving us that statement.

And it's something we don't like to, you know, admit, but we are struggling internally.

In the last week, we've gotten almost like

So we don't have the actual true number right now of how many people are in S4 because it's still going up every day and every hour.

So I want to talk to you all about where you're at and where I think you all should be at by the end of the week and just kind of give you a plan right I think all of you are at the point now where you've got an idea like you you all actually whether you believe it or not you've got an idea now not maybe not all your ideas are game changers, right?

Maybe not all your ideas are super unique, but that doesn't matter, right?

And I guess remember that your idea is a starting point.

Like I know it can be hard, you know, sometimes you walk up to a friend or family member and they're just they ask you like, how is that different?

But it's like that doesn't really matter right now.

What matters right now is that you've got an idea.

You've got a starting point and it's very important that you remember that right now that you've made it this far but ideally And you know, I will say this you don't have to have an idea that is like Super super exciting and huge and game changer.

But ideally the thought of building your idea excites you.

So again, like maybe your idea isn't like a billion dollar company.

It won't give you like 10 million listeners or billion subscribers, but like ideally the thought of working on your idea excites you.

That's all that should matter to you right now.

And if you, I'm just curious, press 1 if the thought of building your idea excites you.

It's like, oh, like if that existed, it'd be kind of cool.

Like I'd be pretty excited to go work on that right now.

And if you're not excited about it, it's okay.

It'd be ideal if you're excited about it, to be honest.

But I think sometimes the early days, it's good to just start working on it.

Even if you're not like super, super amped about it, you know?

Cause I think excitement is actually built over time.

So, and you know, excitement goes up and down.

Like you can start out really excited, but then like week 3, you're like really sad.

And then you're excited again and sad again.

So it's like the emotional journey of an idea is more like this, you know, It's like a sine wave in many ways.

Because you can start out not excited, you can start out really excited, it depends.

And even at BuildSpace, I'm almost 4 years working on the company and 2 years working on BuildSpace, I'm always like this.

I have some super down days and I have some super up days from the outside.

It may seem like BuildSpace is doing great, but in reality, like it's always ups and downs, right?

Like my excitement levels are always changing.

And, but I think I want to make this very clear.

And those of you who have known BuildSpace for a while can probably saw this coming, but we don't want you to stay in idea mode 1 week is more than enough time for you to have thought about your idea and gotten it out there.

You know in the sense of like you, you all have this idea slide.

You all have like, I have a clear picture of what the thing is, right?

You've posted on socials, you got some interest from people.

Well, now I'm sorry, but you actually have to go and create the thing.

This is not, BuildSpace is not where we sit around and just like talk about ideas.

So I'm happy that we spent 1 week talking about the ideas.

I think that's more than enough time to actually talk about and think through your idea.

It's time to go code Whatever it is you do it's time to go do that thing and I think this is actually where most people mess up and I want to be very like Cautious and how I navigate like what I'm talking about here with you.

We're on season 4 of Nights and Weekends and I've seen hundreds and thousands of people go through this process and I want to give you the kind of learnings that I've had seeing all these people.

This step where people go where you have the idea and then go build it is where most people mess up.

It's important to know that people will massively overcomplicate this step.

People will get stuck for like weeks, months, years on just making the thing because it's not perfect yet Or because it's not done yet.

It's very important to know that I'm not saying that you are gonna suffer from this problem.

I've suffered from this problem I've spent months working on an idea and nobody wanted it.

You know, like, nobody, and I'll talk more about why it's important to get people interested in your idea, but it's important to not just stay in idea mode and prototype land and wireframe mode and design land, You know, like at the end of the day, you all are makers, you're creators of things.

It's very important that you get your thing out there.

So I want you to go in and real quick, tell me something that you've used, watched, or listened to this week that you really liked real quick in the chat I maybe you listen to a song or you watch something cool.

What's the what are the kids doing nowadays?

I'm old now you all our kids in the chat now some people 60 in the chat being like what are you talking about man?

To use the bus nice you have a nice bus you like your bus system San Francisco bus system is something else.

How many of you are caught up to 1 Piece?

That's crazy, I've only seen episode 1 and 2.

If you're caught up to 1 Piece, you can do anything.

But yeah, cool, so you all are talking about all these things in the chat, right?

In reality, all the things that you're talking about, they started out as a toy at 1 point.

I know I haven't defined what a toy is, but what is a toy?

If you had to define what a toy is, what is it?

I think many people are actually giving me the perfect thing.

The toy is a tangible form of your early idea.

You're still fucking around with the idea.

It's an early version of your idea that you can play with, or maybe other, your, your friends can play with.

It's not really a completed prototype or an MVP.

But it's also no longer just an idea in your head.

It's not done, but it's not, but it's, but it's begun, you know, And that's really what a toy is.

It's that early version of the thing that people can play with.

And the 1 way I like to think about it is like, it's a real life version of your idea.

Right now, I think 60, 70% of you in the chat, your ideas don't really exist yet.

Remember that the toy is a real life version of that early idea that you can interact with in a small way, or someone else can interact with in a small way.

It's I think the best definition I can possibly give you is like, imagine that you got a friend and you show your friend like your toy and you're like, hey, what do you think?

Maybe it's an early prototype that's really shitty.

Maybe it's like your early version of a song.

Whatever it is, it's that thing that you can give your friend and be like, hey, what do you think?

I'll go through some examples, but I want you to keep that reference in your head.

Like, ok, Pharsa is telling me that I need a toy.

The toy is some early version of the idea that I can show to a buddy, or even just show to myself.

I want to give you a really dumb example.

Let's say I'm building a countdown timer, right?

What is the toy version of a countdown timer?

Let's say I want to build a fantastic countdown timer.

Like I want to build a great countdown timer with all these features.

I want to have like multiple timers, you know, maybe it helps you cook, maybe it helps you do time things.

It's probably gonna look like a really shitty countdown timer.

This is a toy version of your countdown timer, right?

And you know, maybe you're making a song, right?

The first toy version you could show to a friend is maybe 10 seconds long.

It's the intro of your song, the chorus of the song, the lyrics of the song.

You know, maybe you're working on like a new AI app, like your toy version of it may just be the basic early flow right of how it actually It may just be the early it may just be a basic flow of how it works Like you literally going through like a hard-coded example showing someone, hey like this is my AI app, like what do you think?

And you know it's not perfect, it's really ugly, but hey it goes through an example and a use case, right?

So again, I'm making it very clear, a toy is not a completed prototype.

A toy is something before that in many ways.

The toy is simply an early version of your idea.

And by the way, every idea has its toy version.

Now, there's probably 10 toy versions of a new AI app, right?

Now, there's so many toy versions of an AI app, but it's up to you to decide what it is.

I'm going to go through some examples here today to kind of give you a better idea.

So first of all, Taylor Swift, let me put my headphones on.

Taylor Swift, when she records music, She first records it as a voice note on her iPhone and then sends it to her friends.

It's kind of about this guy who's like, he's driving down the street in the middle of the night and he passes his ex-girlfriend's house and it's like, he thinks she hates him, but she's still in love with him.

Okay, so this is an idea called I wish you would it's kind of about this guy who's like okay cool so

so I don't have the audio there but that's taylor swift right like that's it doesn't sound that amazing right but that kind of became like a hit song and I think it's like I know many of you I know I know a lot of you aren't musicians.

Some of you are musicians, some of you are engineers, Some of you are youtubers.

But think about it like learn from that example like 1 of the biggest musicians in the world Just makes toy versions of her idea as voice notes and then sends it to her friends Like that's just something we're thinking about We got a lot of Taylor Swift haters in the chat.

Everyone's jealous because they ain't Taylor, to be honest.

This is, can everybody tell me what this is maybe?

This is the very early draft of Harry Potter.

And then would show to her author friends.

This is a very early draft of 1 book that is probably 1 of the biggest books in the world.

And maybe the mountains tell you something.

This is a very early draft of Lord of the Rings.

Now, the reason I'm showing you this is because like, we all know these books as the perfect thing they are today.

Or we know Taylor Swift's songs as the final songs.

But remember, like, these are the toy versions of these ideas.

Like, you want to write a book about a boy wizard that goes to a wizarding school?

It probably starts out looking like this, right?
