Let's get started So welcome to the season 3 kickoff of nights and weekends This is gonna be really interesting It's day 1 of class so I want you all to kind of sit tight, grab some water because we have a lot to tell you about today.

Oh shit, it's the season 4 kickoff everyone!

Welcome to day 1 of season 4 and yeah I have a lot to tell you, so grab some water.

You may be asking yourselves all sorts of questions.

You're probably asking yourselves all these questions.

And honestly, the goal here is pretty simple.

It's just to tell you how this all works and then set you up for success for the next 6 weeks.

So the stream itself will probably be about an hour.

I started my first business at 13, got 200, 000 revenue by 15, made some short films, I've made, I got into software, built consumer apps for people that have millions, that got millions of users, worked on self-driving cars, worked on my own technology companies.

I founded an elementary school called Zip School that had 200, 000 kids on it and now I'm the founder of Buildspace which is backed by some cool names like YC and A16Z.

But as I'm not sure how that all looks to you all if that's impressive if that's not impressive I guess the main thing I want you to take away is that I'm still learning.

At the end of the day, you're going to see a lot of me over the next 6 weeks, but I want you to understand.

Take everything I say with a grain of salt and remember that I am still learning.

You need to always create your own opinions.

Don't just listen to people and take what they say at face value.

By the way, everyone, this is kind of a cool thing if you want to try it out.

I want you to think of something that someone else made that you are glad exists.

For me, when I think about that question, I'm so happy that someone made Naruto.

So again, we just came up with thousands of things.

And you know, Most of the stuff that you all are talking about in the chat and the things that I mentioned, it started out as nothing more than this idea in somebody's head, right?

It's not, of course, now you see the final product, right?

But remember, someone somewhere in the world was like, huh, it'd be pretty cool if I made a phone with a touch screen, you know, and I guess what I want you to know that all these things that you're talking about were made by people just like, just like you.

They're just people who had an idea and then brought it to life.

And we call these people at Buildspace, builders.

I know the word builders is thrown around a lot.

And I want you all to know that this is how we define it at Buildspace.

And, you know, We tend to romanticize these people, but I want you to know that none of these people had some rare gift.

Bill Gates, Drake, Christopher Nolan, Beyonce, none of them were smarter.

They were all just people who made a lot of stuff and tried a lot over a long period of time.

And I think that's part of what I'm trying to get across here at Nights and Weekends.

By the way, some of you all may not be familiar with Twitch and just Twitch chat.

If the chat is annoying you, feel free to minimize the chat and just not even pay any attention to it.

If you like the chat, you think it's kind of funny, great, you can keep it.

But I just want you to know you can remove the chat if it's annoying to you.

So, you know, I said I just said this right now, right?

Like all these people were no different than you, but what all these people figured out is how to work on their ideas.

And to be honest, the path to working on your ideas is very cloudy.

I mean, just press 1, if you started in an idea and then never finished it.

Like it started out as a thing in your head.

You maybe started the first little bit of it and then you're like, nah, it's done.

It's like probably most of us and I'll press 1 in the chat too, right?

It's a very very cloudy path to working on your ideas full time.

All these people, Christopher Nolan, Drake, Bill Gates, blah, blah, blah.

All these people figured it out, but they figured it out almost by themselves in a way, right?

As a society, there's no clear way to work on your own ideas.

And we want to make that path extremely clear.

This is a school where you work on your own ideas.

Whenever somebody else asks you what you're doing or what BuildSpace is, this is what you can say.

It's simply a school where you work on your own ideas.

Kind of like, you know, you go to school and you learn computer science?

Great, this is a school where you instead take the skills that you have and work on your own ideas.

It doesn't matter what the idea is, music, YouTube, whatever.

I'm just curious in the chat, what are people working on?

Software, music, YouTube, like what are you working on?

AI, software, YouTube, a cooking channel, VR, a marketing agency, crypto, a children's book.

A sustainability app, online shop for natural soap.

I'm working on a self-help piece of software, an AI agency, a health tech agency.

I'm working on copilots for software testers.

I'm working on an adoption center for dogs.

So, again, like all of you have these ideas.

And in reality, there's really no place in the world today where you can work on ideas like that, right?

Like, where are you gonna go and work on like a YouTube channel and an adoption agency for dogs?

Now there's many places in the world to work on like a startup, right?

But I don't know, What about everybody else?

What about all the other beautiful ideas?

And I guess all to say, everything great starts out on the nights and the weekends, right?

This program is called Nights and Weekends, and it's very, very specific.

Somebody just asked me if I'm disturbing the people in the background.

It's not, I don't know, I just pulled up my camera and my mic and yeah, I don't know.

Aren't you disturbing people in the background?

Anyways, it's called nights and weekends Because almost 90% of you have a job.

Press 1 if you have a job Chances are it is almost all of you almost all of you have a job or go to school 1 of the 2 all right And it's called Nights and Weekends because we're asking you to work on your idea on your nights and your weekends.

It's 6 weeks where you take your idea from nothing to something.

And we wanna guide you with lectures, talks, and a bunch of stuff to actually help you do that.

Our whole mission is to get your idea from out of your brain into the real world.

So if you're working on that AI, or if you're working on that AI agency, or that adoption center for dogs, it's like, great.

How can you actually go from idea to actually getting something out into the real world in 6 weeks, which is kind of crazy to hear, but most things are possible in 6 weeks.

BuildSpace, as you'll find, and I'll explain a lot more over the course of this presentation, BuildSpace almost purely relies upon you.

It is very hard for us to motivate you from afar, but we will try our best.

And I just want you to know that a lot of the energy needs to come from you in this program, because if you don't put in the work, it's not gonna happen, I promise.

I think it's gonna be really interesting.

I'll show you videos from last season as well, but nights and weekends is always a really good time.

And I want to make it clear, I don't want you to think that this is a course.

I don't want you to think that this is a startup accelerator.

I just want you to think that this is just build space.

I just want you to truly work on any idea that you're excited about.

How many people are in the chat right now?

Like 3000, like 3500, 3400 people, right?

Like all of you showed up to this random landing page, went through this random application, got a great, got some random acceptance email.

And now you're just pulling up to this live stream with this guy named Farza, right?

Like life's kind of crazy, but it just shows that you are excited to work on your idea.

And we have over 3, 346 ideas that hopefully will be brought to life, right?

But I think things weren't always this way.

When we first, by the way, we're on Nights and Weekends season 4, all right?

So I wanna show you nights and weekends season 1.

It was literally 500 people and it was only web 3 projects.

But then we had about 80 people finish And we threw an IRL event in San Francisco.

We rented out someone's backyard and for 3 days, we just hacked on stuff and we hung out.

But then we decided to run Nights and Weekends Season 2.

So we tried to keep it only AI and Web3 in season 2.

This time 1500 people join and 320 people finish and look at all the people that came out to San Francisco for that event.

After that, we as BuildSpace decided to all in to Nights and Weekends as our like sole product that we're working on.

And then we decided to run season 3 and season 3 was actually really scary.

Season 3 we decided that any idea would be allowed in.

Music, art, software, literally Whatever.

And we asked ourselves, could all these ideas live under the same?

Can an AI agency live under the same roof as an adoption center for dogs?

And can that live under the same roof as like a video game company?

Press 1 if you're like it could work, press 2 if you're like ah I don't know.

So no matter what no matter whether you're pressing 1 or 2 it's just your opinion right?

I guess all we can do is look back at history now.

The result of season 3 was absolutely insane.

And I want to show you a quick video here to kind of give you an idea of what it was.

Sorry, I have this other slides, but real quick on season 3, 7, 500 people entered, that is a God, That is a crazy number of ideas.

The diversity was absolutely insane and I want to show you all how it went.

And then you can decide for yourself if all these ideas can live under the same roof.

So that was season 3, just like a very small, small, small, like take from season 3 to show you all the types of ideas that were worked on last season.

And now we're in season 4, and we've almost doubled the number of people in the season.

So it's kind of crazy to see how people, that all these ideas could live under the same roof.

And with season 3, a thousand people made it to the end and 225 people came out to our San Francisco event.

We had so many people who could not come out to San Francisco, right?

Because of visa issues, because of like financial issues.

So we decided to actually run an event in Dubai for the first time last season.

And we had 125 people come out for 3 days in Dubai.

We had people from India, Croatia, all types of places.

And again, these IRL events were a test for our fuller vision.

At the end of the day, you all are here on this livestream and you got an idea, right?

But what happens after nights and weekends, right?

All these people who finished season 3, season 2, season 1, what are they going to do?

Well, how do you actually end up going all in on your idea?

We decided that we wanted to build a physical campus for those that wanted to go full-time on their ideas.

Like an actual school where you could show up physically with a bunch of other people who want to work on their ideas and I think, let me just show you, so.

Today, after months of building, we're finally opening our first physical BuildSpace campus, located in San Francisco.

We wanted to build a place that felt familiar, like a school, but we wanted to feel a little bit different.

We got anime walls to inspire you, a cool Apple style lecture hall where instructors will teach students about things like design, marketing, and writing.

A Japanese style alleyway with boots where we'll do one-on-one sessions to guide students and even a small quiet garden to get some deep thinking and writing done.

This campus is for the people that wanna go all in on their ideas, and in many ways, this is the alternative life path, the path where you simply figure out how to work on the things that you love full time.

Maybe you want to train you open-source AI models.

Maybe you want to create viral YouTube videos, figure out a startup idea, build a small indie SaaS business, record music, whatever.

This campus is a safe place for you to give your idea an honest shot.

And today is kind of a special day because it's the first day of school.

These students are full-time in SF for 3 months and they're working on all sorts of stuff.

We even got a guy working on a D2C badminton shuttle business.

And every week students will have to ship.

Every week, we'll push you to make progress on your ideas by actually getting things into the real world.

What's cool is all 35 of these students actually came from nights and weekends.

Do well on nights and weekends, make moves on your idea, and then get invited out to the campus.

I just really want to show you the whole picture of how BuildSpace works.

I know it's kind of like a confusing thing, but I want to tell you the whole story right here.

But you know, I know that a lot of you are watching this and you're in other parts of the world, right?

And San Francisco is very, very hard to get to for many of you.

Our campus right now, by the way, that's where I am right now.

I am in San Francisco at our first physical campus.

And these are a lot of our first students.

And I know a lot of you are wondering like, oh man, only San Francisco trash, right?

I think being held back by your passport or your visa is extremely shitty.

It makes absolutely no sense and we know that.

So we're building more of these actually.

Honestly, the mission is to have a build space in every country before I die.

So the goal is to not die anytime soon because this is going to take a really long time.

But we want to have this in every country such that if you're someone with an idea, you can actually attend our campus.

And we're actually already looking at our next campus.

This is actually a very early image of a place which I won't mention, but maybe if you have detective skills you can figure what this place is.

But we're actually working on a place right now.

It's somewhere in Asia, that's all I'll say.

And by the way, I don't know if you all know, but all this is actually tuition free, nights and weekends is free, and the campus is free.

We actually make money via governments who subsidize our programs.

So within the governments themselves of these different countries will actually subsidize these programs.

So you as a student will never have to pay anything.

So that's how it works, that's BuildSpace overall.
