So the question I wanted to know was just how to position yourself as the expert or higher up the ranks when you have little experience.

From your website or just social media or just in general, part of the problem is just I don't know, I feel like I'm too young to seem credible in a way.

Like if I were to be charging thousands of dollars, it's just I have to know that there's something behind that to kind of justify it.

I understand my self-worth, but it's just I feel like other people won't see that.

Because I don't care what anybody thinks or says, okay?

If you were to browse the internet right now and you just stumble upon a bunch of accounts on Instagram Or on Behance, how do you know how old they are?

How do you know what kind of design pedigree they have or can you tell?

So, the answer to your question is actually easy and obvious, which is you do good work, you put good work out there, it doesn't matter if you're 17, 7 or 77.

So, now let's talk about your self-worth.

You say, I'm worth it but other people won't see that.

That's not coming from the voice of a person who's saying that.

It's too bad you can't see it so I'll find somebody who sees the worth.

Now, no matter how much I charge, and you guys have heard me drop astronomical numbers compared to the numbers that you're seeing, and yet I still think it's a discount.

No matter how much money I charge, I think it should be higher.

So if you start to learn to believe in yourself, and it's okay because you're 17, 18 years old right now, you're going to high school, you haven't yet come to your own full power and to know what you're capable of doing, you still have things to learn in your life and that's okay.

I don't want you to walk out there at 17 or 18 saying, I learned a few things in my commercial art class in high school and now I'm just, that's it, that's the highest achievement, that's as much as I need to learn.

There's still a lot of things you need to learn and just know this, there's great potential and value in you, you're just trying to align your own life experiences to meet that value that you already see in yourself.

I want to charge a million dollars for the things that I do.

I know I'm worth at least that amount of money And I'm going to keep working towards that until somebody actually sees the same value that I see in myself So that means I need to acquire greater skills I need to learn more things and I need to have more experiences to help people so that they can see that They can see the same image I see of myself.

So I remember from previous videos, you talking about like charging on value, that kind of thing, like charging on output versus input, these kinds of things.

And that if you want to be more valuable, you have to solve problems other than graphic problems, like stuff like that.

I remember that and I believe in that but part of the issue is like right now I just solve graphic problems.

I walk in and I know that what I do is worth money and I know that if I sat down with a client, I could solve major graphic problems essentially.

This is why sometimes now I go on stage and I say, hi, my name is Chris Do.

And it's because I don't want to solve graphic design problems anymore because I'm capable of solving much bigger problems.

Some people who watch this who are purists, who are great craftspeople say that's heresy.

That's a bunch of malarkey that you're just peddling out there and I don't think so at all.

If you look at Brian Collins, he talks about them being an experienced design company.

So they're designing experiences through lots of different things, through copywriting, through image making, through user interface design.

Whatever it is that they need to do, they're going to use the full extent of their creativity to solve a problem.

So if a person tells me, I have a conversion issue where people are coming on the site and the bounce rate is too high or they're not buying as often as they should be relative to industry standards, I want to fix that problem.

And sometimes that means that I have to do something that I'm not trained to do, which is most of the time.

So if I come into it saying, you need a new logo every single time, then it doesn't really matter what the problem is.

The answer cannot always be the same, right?

So, that's where I have to stop myself to say, like, just because I love to make logos doesn't mean this person needs a logo.

I need to kind of think about the problem and find an appropriate solution.

So the best thing that you can do for yourself as a young aspiring graphic designer, I'm speaking to you specifically but to everybody else that's watching this, is it's good to learn your skill and to understand foundational principles of graphic design and to have the 10, 000 hours of practice that somebody like Connor has had.

But then also to broaden the disciplines in which you study, maybe to include psychology, philosophy, anthropology, something else to include in your mix so that when a new problem comes, you have skill sets that go beyond just I know how to make a logo.

Okay, and it sounds to me like you are exploring those things already and I think that's good.

As you're about to go into college pretty soon, be open to the humanities, to literature, to mythology, to rhetoric.

Those kinds of things will help you more than just learning more craftsmanship.

If you're like dipping your toes in a lot of things, like you said, like explore a lot of things and then you get to a point where you can solve a lot of problems, right?

So then how do you come back from there and basically focus down to 1 particular thing?

I'm an expert at solving problems for a lot of money.

Why are you guys talking to me right now?

Why do you think people hire us if I am openly admitting that this is what I like to do?

You're like a teacher for like, I mean, life problems, I guess.

So aren't I doing exactly what I tell you to do and do you have a problem perceiving me as an expert?

No, I know I know what you're getting to but what I mean is yeah What I'm What I mean is, how do you basically tell, like position yourself on, let's say, the website.

I mean, do you just say, I solve problems?

Like Connor, Connor does just logo design, right?

So he's known for just logo design so it's just so I'm not sure if I mean I get the question right but I don't know

Are you asking like how to phrase, like if you just are a designer, like you guys, all you guys, Young Guns, how do you phrase that on the website so that you can seem like a problem solving guy like Chris?

No, I'm saying, I'm actually saying the opposite of it.

Like, if you're solving a lot of problems, how do you come back and say, I'm an expert at solving this kind of problem?

have to say, okay, first of all, You're not in danger of saying that just today because you're not an expert at solving all kinds of problems yet, right?

Now, remember you guys, I'm double your age right now so I have a lot of experience in my life and you're trying to just make this hyper shortcut and jump to the end and you might be able to do that some of you might be able to I'm not discounting that but more often than not I can save you some time so you don't have to spend 20 years trying to figure it out but maybe you spend 6 years figuring it out so right now if you know that your goal is to learn how to solve more complex problems that people find to be valuable, then you align your life towards that path and you read books, you go to seminars, you watch videos, you take courses that help you understand that a little bit better and then therefore you shave off 14 years of learning down to 6 and that's pretty awesome.

So just don't be so impatient to say like I have to be there today because right now I suspect you guys, you young guns are just trying to figure out who your creative self is in the making space and there's nothing wrong with that.

That's what I spent the first half of my career doing.

So the thing is it's kind of easier for you to look at from where you're at and look forward 20 years and say that's where I want to be and then grow impatient trying to be there tomorrow.

It's just not going to happen and that's okay.

If you come to the to that realization you won't be so hard on yourself and that's that's something that you need to kind of to hold true otherwise you're going to become depressed.

You want to work on branding systems, so there's still a lot you need to learn about branding.

I only fully understood what branding meant and how to do it in the last 5 years.

Prior to that, I thought I was doing branding, and I was not at all.

I was creating identity systems, but I was not doing branding because branding is a lot more complicated than that.

So, why don't you master that, and as soon as you hit that pinnacle, set yourself a new goal and just keep climbing and keep climbing until you acquire all these different skill sets and points of view that you can help clients through most of the problems that they have.

There's a good reason why I'm not standing in front of you as a 23-year-old because I wouldn't have those experiences to reflect on you right now.

Some of you are just coming out of high school.

Some of you have some college and didn't even go to college.

And I don't think he was, Arun was being dismissive to Connor.

Connor's done an excellent job of positioning himself because everything on his Instagram seems to be about logo design And so when somebody needs a logo, they're gonna call him That's why he has work opportunities right now but Connor in the meantime is working on developing his whole creative his whole creative self and Eventually, he's gonna flip the switch and migrate away from what he's known for into something he'd like to be known for.

And so there's a transition period and you go through that and then you change again.

Now, let me just do like a fundamental like meat and potatoes thing conversation.

If you're watching this and you're thinking, what can I do that's going to be valuable so I don't get stuck in the maker space where it's not valuable and I'm going to be competing on Fiverr or Upwork or 1 of those marketplaces or 99designs?

Well let me tell you There's a couple of careers or career paths or jobs that you can have right now that are valuable to lots of people.

User experience design, user interface design, social media marketing slash content marketing, those things are valuable.

If you know how to build and create impactful websites, that's valuable, that's important to somebody.

So those are the general 4 things I would focus in on if you're still trying to figure out your career path.

Earlier you were saying that you wouldn't be standing in front of us as a 23 year old because you are still figuring it out and you've only figured branding out 5 years ago and all that.

So as a 23 year old and I just started my YouTube channel, I want to put content out there.

And 1 of the things I struggle with is thinking that who wants to listen to a 23-year-old talk about branding or whatever I'm going to talk about.

So how do I like, do people want to hear me or am I still not an expert?

Like I always have this I'm not who am I to go in front of people and tell them what to think or what to do or Well,

you're not telling them what to think or what to do You're just telling them your story from your perspective and that's really important.

Now despite what I just said to you that I'm not a 23 year old standing in front of you giving you career or life advice and and we can accept that that to be fine.

However, Demarcus Brownlee, Logan Paul, Casey Neistat, Linus Tech Tips, they all started when they're kids I think relatively young and so the audience and the community grows up with them.

In fact, on YouTube, I'm the anomaly, not the standard.

YouTube is full of young people sharing their story, their life experience.

So there's value in just learning along with you and traveling along your side as you go along your journey.

And that's why they have so many subscribers because somewhere in the universe, because they're young people watching YouTube, they're gonna say, I relate to that person.

I'm also from a developing country and I'm also struggling with self-confidence.

So what you wanna do is not to try and stand there and say, I'm the expert, I figured this stuff out, this is what you need to do, but to say like, I'm still figuring it out.

I'm not sure what it is I'm supposed to be doing but here's what I figured out so far.

And that's actually more valuable than just saying Here I am, here's what I've done.

You guys are asking me lots of questions about how did I make that mental switch?

How did I start to think to myself, I'm good, I love myself, that I'm great.

Well, I can't share that experience with you in real time because it didn't happen now.

I have to look into the past and I have to recreate in my mind like, what were those moments?

But imagine if you were watching this channel, 1 day I'm coming to you, I'm like crying my eyes out, I'm like, oh my god, today was a really bad day, here's what happened, right?

I'm feeling, I'm having suicidal thoughts right now you guys and then all of a sudden the next day 2 days later.

I come back and said look I went down this dark path I wasn't sure if I was gonna make another video, but here I am.

I figured it out This is what I want from my life stick around with me you guys You're gonna see things change And you see that happening in real time, it's like a real time drama that's unfolding in front of your eyes.

I'm pretty sure that would have a lot more views than the channel that we have right now.

So For all you young people, youngish people, young in mindset, don't be afraid to produce a video.

Just be honest and transparent because that's what people want from you.

Vulnerability really makes you relatable with people.

That's why I'm not so relatable unfortunately.

So you know when I was in the Philippines, somebody had asked this question like, what's your weakness?

And I said, oh, guys, you have to ask that dark question here.

We're trying to celebrate positivity and have the right mindset.

And so the camera and the spotlight is like looking in the audience for my wife.

And I could see her ducking behind people like, do not pick me.

And then I said, the best person to ask is my wife.

So eventually the microphone gets passed over to her, she grabs it, and first she says, he doesn't have any.

And then everybody like laughs and cheers, right?

And she then corrects herself, she says, he believes he doesn't have any.

And maybe that is my weakness, I don't believe I have weakness.

a good comment that came up here from Caesar, and he was just talking about sometimes people look for younger folks to get their input, especially with a lot of new media.

And he was referring specifically to social media.

So Sharif, you're talking about how maybe people perceive you as this young person that doesn't know much and you're not as experienced, but people look to young folks for stuff that old folks don't need.

So I think that might be another approach to things where you could feel like you might be more of a specialist than someone else.

Because you're young and you know it's cool.

You're young, dumb, and broke high school kids, as the song goes.

They should just throw caution to the wind and be willing to try anything and everything because they don't have much to lose and that's the fantastic part about being young.

You can walk into a gym, get punched in the face and you can bounce right back up.

You can go snowboarding, break your ankle and just bounce right back up.

When you get old, you break your hip, it's game over.

It's like your death sentence is right there, right?

You're only beautiful, young, and healthy once.

Take advantage of the fact that you're young.

See, that's how I just turned a young thing into a positive thing.

If you start to train your mind to think like that, you can achieve anything.

Well, I can't share that experience with you in real time because it didn't happen now. I have to look into the past and I have to recreate in my mind like, what were those moments? But imagine if you were watching this channel, 1 day I'm coming to you, I'm like crying my eyes out, I'm like, oh my god, today was a really bad day, here's what happened, right?

I'm feeling, I'm having suicidal thoughts right now you guys and then all of a sudden the next day 2 days later. I come back and said look I went down this dark path I wasn't sure if I was gonna make another video, but here I am. I figured it out This is what I want from my life stick around with me you guys You're gonna see things change And you see that happening in real time, it's like a real time drama that's unfolding in front of your eyes. I'm pretty sure that would have a lot more views than the channel that we have right now. Do you understand that?

So For all you young people, youngish people, young in mindset, don't be afraid to produce a video. Just be honest and transparent because that's what people want from you. Okay?

Speaker 2: We talk about that a lot. Vulnerability really makes you relatable with people.

Speaker 1: Yeah. That's why I'm not that vulnerable. That's why I'm not so relatable unfortunately.

Speaker 2: Because you're a robot.

Speaker 1: Yeah. So you know when I was in the Philippines, somebody had asked this question like, what's your weakness? What are you bad at? And I said, oh, guys, you have to ask that dark question here. We're trying to celebrate positivity and have the right mindset.

I said, I don't know. Let me ask my wife. And so the camera and the spotlight is like looking in the audience for my wife. And I could see her ducking behind people like, do not pick me. And then I said, the best person to ask is my wife.

So eventually the microphone gets passed over to her, she grabs it, and first she says, he doesn't have any. And then everybody like laughs and cheers, right? I'm like, honey, don't say that. And she then corrects herself, she says, he believes he doesn't have any. Then everybody erupts with laughter.

And maybe that is my weakness, I don't believe I have weakness. I don't know.

Speaker 2: That could be it.

Speaker 4: You can't recognize your own weaknesses. That's your weakness.

Speaker 1: I have none.

Speaker 4: Either way. There was

Speaker 2: a good comment that came up here from Caesar, and he was just talking about sometimes people look for younger folks to get their input, especially with a lot of new media. And he was referring specifically to social media. So Sharif, you're talking about how maybe people perceive you as this young person that doesn't know much and you're not as experienced, but people look to young folks for stuff that old folks don't need. So I think that might be another approach to things where you could feel like you might be more of a specialist than someone else.

Speaker 4: Because you're young and you know it's cool.

Speaker 1: You're young, dumb, and broke high school kids, as the song goes. Now you know what? Young people should be fearless. They should just throw caution to the wind and be willing to try anything and everything because they don't have much to lose and that's the fantastic part about being young. You can walk into a gym, get punched in the face and you can bounce right back up.

You can go snowboarding, break your ankle and just bounce right back up. When you get old, you break your hip, it's game over. It's like your death sentence is right there, right? That's what happens. So you guys, don't waste your youth.

Don't waste your youth. Go do something with it. You're only beautiful, young, and healthy once. Take advantage of the fact that you're young. Don't look at that as a negative.

See, that's how I just turned a young thing into a positive thing. If you start to train your mind to think like that, you can achieve anything. And I want to make a comment here. Nisaray said, Chris is like my big brother. I wish I had.
